Eila jerked in bed, her feet trying to find purchase as if missing a step in a staircase. Her eyelids snapped open, and she found herself looking at her bedroom ceiling. The cloth holding the block of Crumble and the thirty-seven pills was still where she’d left it, across the room. The mirror was still inside a now-ajar closet, its hidden front still covered with cloth. The shades, on the windows that had them, were drawn. But the early-morning sun was shining through even those, mocking their lack of substance and washing the room in light.

Eila rolled over and took in her room’s disorder, feeling foolish. Why had she been so afraid? The darkness had made everything terrifying, allowing her mind to wake-dream things beyond rational comprehension. But now, in the daylight, the night’s fears seemed as insubstantial as … as …

She’d had an image in mind. Something from her dream. But what had seemed so obvious a moment ago was already draining like water from an unplugged sink. She felt a rush of panic — somehow, even without Crumble, her dreams were being stolen!

She tried to hold onto the images. She’d been with Levi. They’d been in Pavilion. There had been tunnels? Yes, she was almost sure there had been tunnels. She’d seen the Fog, then a place that was familiar from long ago.

But where was it? What was it? And where had she gone next?

It was no use. Within two minutes, all she remembered were the feelings. She remembered that she’d been afraid, but not exactly why or whether those same things would be frightening now, in the light. She remembered feeling somehow empowered, but not why. She’d entered the Fog. But how had she come out?

She rolled over, groaning. It was gone. Whether the remnants of her dream were being stolen or simply evaporating like — well, like a spring fog — she had no idea. But it didn’t matter.

She was awake — and normal life, such that it was, beckoned.

She closed her eyes, sighed, then rolled back the other way. But she stopped when something hard pressed into her hip, pinching her skin between bed and bone.

Eila sat up, searching for the offending object, but the bed was empty because the thing that had pinched her was in her pocket. Confused, she reached in and fished it out, then held it up in the sunlight.

It was a beautiful stone, red in the center, and dark blue around the edges.
