Chapter Twelve
She assumed Con would leave shortly after breakfast, but he hung out. He even helped clean up the dishes, washing the pans. After his second cup of coffee, he laid on her bed watching her gather her backpack and load up her computer.
âTomorrowâs your early night, right? Iâll pick you up when you get off. Weâll get dinner.â
Wrenâs hand froze on the open pocket of her bag. Her back was to Con, and she hoped he didnât catch her hesitation. It was a repeat of the night before with less anger. It still left her unsettled knowing sheâd have to lie, especially after the conversation theyâd just had about opening up to one another. Sheâd meant every word except for certain aspects of her life. This was where it would get tricky.
âI canât.â
âWhy not?â
She bit her lip. âSchool. Iâve got two papers.â
âTake that shit seriously, huh?â
âYeah, I do.â Wren was a few weeks away from graduation. It had taken her longer than sheâd hoped to get her degree, but it was a proud moment. For her.
He hooked his arm around her waist and fell back on the bed, taking her with him. Con smiled, brushing her hair away from her face. His rough, scabbed knuckles caressed over her jaw in a light touch.
âYou quitting the strip club after you graduate? Get something better.â
âNo.â Wren had planned out the next three years, which would keep her exactly where she was and doing exactly what she did. âIâm actually going to get my Masters. Iâve already been accepted into the program.â
âBig fucking brain you got, huh?â he teased. âYou get that from your parents?â
âMy dad was really smart, more street smarts, but he had a head for business too.â Wren sighed. âHe just didnât always make the best decisions.â
âYou holding out on me?â
Wren stared across the room. If anyone would understand and not pass judgement, she assumed it would be a man like Con who was notoriously known for being on the wrong side of the law.
âHeâs in prison.â
âFor what?â
Wren inhaled and slowly let out a deep breath, contemplating her approach. There was no sugar coating her fatherâs crimes. They were public knowledge.
âI did a year, Wren.â
She whipped her head. It probably shouldnât come as a surprise, but it did. âWhat did you do?â
âDrugs.â When her eyes widened, he shifted closer. âNot recreational. I was transporting, not a large amount but enough to get some time.â
âSo, East is in the drug trade?â
Wren had heard most of the rumors, but nothing had been confirmed. Until now.
âWe were. Not anymore.â He slid his hand over her thigh. âWhatâs your dad in for?â
âFirearms. Heâs on his fourth year of twelve. The first was the hardest, at least for me. I joke that he wonât even recognize me when he finally gets out.â
âYou donât see him?â
If it was up to Wren, she would.
âHe wonât let me visit. Says he doesnât want me to see him that way. I actually tried visiting twice, once the first year and another time his third.
