Zachary

As soon as I wake up in the morning, I know that something is wrong. My arms are empty and the side of my body that was warmed by Ariah’s embrace is now cold.

God damn it. She lied.

I’m both furious and insane with worry. And I know exactly where she has gone.

“Morning Zachary,” a customer says as I storm down the steps behind the bar. “I know the pub isn’t open yet, but I was hoping I could grab a coffee.”

“Help yourself,” I call over my shoulder, already halfway out the door. “I have something to take care of.”

No sooner do my feet hit the muddy ground at the bottom of the steps then I fly into a frenzied panic, lifting into the air to go after Ariah and hoping that nothing too undoable has happened yet. Whatever she has gotten herself into—which I expect is another tied-up hostage situation like before—I will get her out of it.

But when I get to the city and arrive at the tattered apartment (which surprisingly is still standing, albeit with a few solid holes in the structure that the rain is now falling into), instead of finding Ariah being held hostage or imprisoned, I find her sitting on the couch looking like a dog that’s been beaten into obedience.

I stand just outside the cracked orifice in the wall to watch and listen for a moment.

Ariah is working alongside Marko. It sounds like he’s talking about her old marketing position at his firm, and it looks like Ariah is nodding in agreement. She is even wearing her old wedding band on her left hand as if nothing has happened.

“What the hell is going on?” I say under my breath.

I half shift and drop down through the hole in the roof of the apartment. The light rain drips off the tips of my wings and streams down my human chest as I descend and drop right into the middle of the living room before them. Marko doesn’t even so much as try to stop me. He doesn’t say anything. He simply stares at me and grins, the look of a man who knows he has the upper hand now.

“Ariah,” I say, completely ignoring Marko’s presence in the room. “What are you doing here?”

She looks up at me with despondent and empty eyes.

“Marko has agreed to return the dragon scales—or at least the seven of them that remain. And he has promised not to interfere in the shifter world again. He will leave Cress and everyone else alone, in exchange for my return to him as his wife.”

I can’t believe she is doing this.

“We already talked about this,” I remind her, trying to stay in control of my frustration. “We agreed that you wouldn’t do this.” I tilt my head toward Marko. “And you know better than to trust the promises of this human, Ariah. I don’t need to tell you that.”

I can see in her face that she knows I’m right, but I can also tell that she won’t budge.
