We reappeared on a cobblestone street in front of the entrance of a marble Roman villa. A few people walked nearbyâsome of them in high quality clothing like me and Torrence wore, and others in more ragged tunics that made it clear they were servants. They blinked and shook their heads as they looked at us, but then their eyes glazed over, and they continued on their ways. It was like theyâd had deja vuânot like theyâd just witnessed two people materialize in thin air.
Unless humans had magic shoved in their faces, their minds rewired themselves around it to make logical sense of it.
But they could only miss so much. So I quickly reached for the Crown and put it back in the ether. Then I returned my focus to the wooden door in front of me, raised my knuckles up to it, and knocked.
The door opened, and a human man in a plain white toga studied us, taking in our robes that made it clear we were of higher status than he was. âGood morning,â he said. âHow may I help you?â
âWeâre here to see Livia,â I said simply, as if he should have already known that.
âShe didnât tell me sheâd be receiving guests.â
âThatâs because weâre not guests. Weâre family.â I flipped over my hand, reached for my magic, and a small flame grew from my palm.
His eyes widened, and he stepped back, like he was afraid my fire might burn him. âYouâre like my mistress,â he said breathlessly. âGoddesses.â
âYes, weâre like Livia. And weâve come a long way to speak with her.â I didnât break my gaze from his.
âWe need her help,â Torrence chimed in, and she raised her hand as a small bit of purple magic swirled around her fingers. âAnd weâll be helping her, too.â
He bowed his head, like he was afraid to look at either of us, and opened the door wider. âCome wait in the foyer,â he said. âIâll find the mistress and tell her of your arrival. But first, would you mind putting that out?â He glanced at my palm, where the flame still danced.
âOf course.â I closed my hand into a fist to snuff out the fire, then he nodded in approval and moved over so Torrence and I could walk inside.
The foyer had a small fountain in the center, and colorful murals on the walls. There were benches inside, but Torrence and I opted to stand.
âI feel like Iâm back in the Otherworld,â Torrence said.
âIt looks like the villas in the Otherworld,â I agreed. âBut thereâs so much fire and earth magic here, so it doesnât feel like the Otherworld.â
âThe volcano is that intense?â
âItâs like a monster hiding beneath the surface. If the people here knew how much power it had, they would be long evacuated.â
âSounds dangerous.â
âItâs fueling my magic. Making me stronger than ever.â
âGood.â Her eyes glinted with approval, then flashed with darkness. âBecause when we go up against this Scepter, weâre gonna need as much magic as possible.
