CHAPTER
TWENTY-NINE
LONDON
Arthur Preston leaned toward the mirror to closely inspect his face. He had perfect eyesight, but he thought he saw the hint of a red abrasion near his hairline.
Where could that have come from?
But upon further investigation, he withdrew and exhaled. It wasnât anything. Heâd probably imagined it, attributing it to the amount of stress heâd been under. He shrugged it off and then smoothed down his blue oxford shirt, forcing the fabric to accentuate the contours of his sculpted chest.
Who says the CEOs of a Fortune 100 company has to look like he hasnât worked out in twenty years?
Preston wondered if he could blaze several new trails as the freshly-minted leader of JF Industries, no matter how temporary it was. There wasnât any reason a busy CEO couldnât maintain a certain level of physique, even if the one he had currently would likely overwhelm most of his sudden peers in the industry. Heâd been around enough of them to know that for a group that had a knack for seeing into the future and knowing what it took to get there, most of them werenât willing to make the sacrifice necessary to get a shredded body. Preston figured these CEOs concluded that they had already made so many sacrifices to reach the zenith of their careers that they didnât feel inclined to make any more. They wanted to enjoy the fruits of their labor. And Preston couldnât really blame them. But he wasnât about to go soft. His role as JF Industriesâ new CEO defied conventional odds. He wasnât just to be the public face of the companyâhe was hired to do the impossible. And why not? Heâd trained his entire life for this moment. Itâs why heâd been chosen.
A knock on the dressing room door snapped him back to the present as he remembered the whole reason why he was primping. He had a large convention hall packed with people waiting to hear from him.
âCome in,â Preston said as he threaded a Windsor knot with his tie and tightened it.
A man in his twenties wearing a headset with a wrap-around microphone and clutching a clipboard entered the room.
âMr. Preston, did you have a chance to look over the PowerPoint presentation the emcee is using for your introduction?â the man asked. âIâd hate for you to have to spend the few days of your tenure answering questions about a mistake we made.â
Preston squinted and looked at the man.
âWhatâs your name again?â he asked.
âOlly Baker,â the man said.
âWell, Mr. Baker, Iâm going to trust that you know what youâre doing and that youâve hired a competent staff,â Preston said. âAnd thatâs how you lead. You donât need to look over everyoneâs shoulder to make sure that theyâre doing what youâve asked them to do. You trust them to do their job to the best of their abilities and do it well. And if they make a mistake, you brush it off. You canât expect perfect from yourself or from anyone else.
