Great Aunt Mamie Seal's laughter hung in the air like church bells, getting smaller and smaller but never really going away. Jackie thought she could still hear it minutes later and for a while she stood stock still, afraid to move. All of them did.

Finally, Jackie spoke, hoping that the sound of her voice would stop the echoes of Great Aunt Mamie Seal's laughter ringing in her ears. "Where do you think she went?"

"I don't know," Judy said, holding out her hand for Xanh to come to her. The gesture had made sense before, when Xanh could still land on her hand. Now it looked odd. Xanh was much too big to land there. "But Xanh and I are going to bed. Good night." Judy sounded like she might want to swallow raw liver more than she wanted Jackie to have a good night. Xanh flapped his wings and went airborne before landing as gently as he could on Judy's shoulder. Xanh seemed oblivious to Judy's annoyance, whereas Jupiter bristled, standing at attention on the top of Jackie's head.

"Wait. You're angry with me? I didn't do anything to you. You're the one who tried to make me look bad in front of Great Aunt Mamie Seal, bringing up all that stuff about Jupiter."

"If telling the truth is making you look bad, then yes, I was trying to make you look bad. I'm not angry with you, Jackie, I'm just tired of you messing around. You're not even really supposed to be an apprentice. You haven't taken any of the tests. You didn't even know what a dragonist was. I've been getting ready to be a dragonist my whole life. I speak Chinese, Vietnamese, French, and English. How many languages can you speak? How long have you studied? Madame probably just put you in charge to teach me a lesson about being humble or something, but this is ridiculous."

Jackie was taken aback. She knew that Judy probably resented not being in charge, but this was a bit much. "Great Aunt Mamie Seal put me in charge because I came up with a better plan than you. You're just jealous."

"Jealous? You don't get it. This isn't school. This is my life, okay? I was already going to be a dragonist before Xanh came along, but now that he has there's no way I'm going to let somebody like you sabotage everything and put him in danger."

Judy was really going off the deep end. She was yelling, and her face was streaked with tears. She was obviously very angry about something that Jackie didn't understand. This was beyond being hurt about Jackie being in charge.

Jackie consciously tried to make her voice calm. She couldn't defend herself if she didn't know what Judy was accusing her of. "Sabotage? I honestly don't know what you're talking about." Jupiter was watching Xanh. Xanh showed no signs of moving.

Judy laughed, but like Great Aunt Mamie Seal's laugh. It wasn't comforting. "You've done everything wrong that you possibly could for Jupiter.
