CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
THE CHASE
Verl watched with the others as six helicopters came up to the edge of the gorge Lance had left not three minutes earlier. Four helicopters were ordered after Lance with the others dispatched to find the wreckage of the downed Dragon Flies and search for bodies. Lance could be seen circling far below as the helicopters dove after him.
"At least we'll have the satisfaction of catching their leader," Verl said to the silent room. "I really didn't have any choice about the planes. We couldn't afford to let them escape."
No one else said anything. Colonel Wilkins and Major Decker sat quietly watching the screen observing the action. There was no hint of either approval or disapproval on either face. This was a top-secret project which they were obligated to support and to which they had committed their full cooperation and assets. It wasn't their operation to win or lose. While they would look bad if their lack of support was responsible for failure, they could not be held accountable for the decisions that were made concerning the missionâs progress or the use of assets they provided. While Verl may have desired their input, he enjoyed having the power to call the shots. He wasn't afraid of making a bad decision. Leaders were expected to make decisions. Not every decision would be optimal or even correct. Everyone makes bad decisions at one time or another. Even the most successful entrepreneurs of all time made blunders. They taught that all you have to do to be a winner is make more right decisions than wrong ones. The real sin was in not making a decision at all. Especially bad was to delay making a decision for fear of failure. This had never been a problem for Verl. He loved making decisions and up until now at least, he had made more winning decisions than losing.
It was obvious to those watching in RECON that Lance would touch the ground several seconds before the helicopters. As this became apparent, Verl ordered two helicopters to circle ahead of the place Lance would land blocking his escape. The others were to keep up the chase and land as soon as possible.
Lance coasted his hang-glider towards a game trail at the bottom of a gorge about twenty feet from the edge of the river. He could hear the swollen river rushing over boulders above the helicopter noise coming from his rear. The game trail worn by the feet of thousands of animals over hundreds of years weaved between two large rocks right at the tree line. Using the last of his glide momentum Lance was just able to clear the two large rocks and land on the trail directly behind them under some oak trees. He unsnapped the harness and was running the moment his feet hit the ground. The Sequoia National Forest immediately swallowed him. Verl and his allies watched the helicopters land seconds later spilling out men giving chase. The two helicopters still in the air were reporting that the growth was too thick for ground visibility.
