They were at Stewart’s Redoubt in the middle of the Brunswick Line within half an hour. They had seen no one on the way, and Mr. Charles had clung to Frank as if this was the way he always rode.

The gate to the redoubt swung open, and they were inside and safe.

Or thought they were.

An officious captain came out from the blockhouse to ask what they thought they were doing, coming into the redoubt in the middle of a battle.

“I’m taking Miss Atkins down to Wanganui. She witnessed the murder of Major Barnes and his wife. And we were just attacked by their killer. I thought…”

Mr. Charles chose that time to start moaning loudly.

The captain glared at him and turned back to Frank.

“And you’re taking this lunatic with you as well?”

Frank put a hand on Molly Charles’s arm to stop her from punching the captain’s sneering mouth.

“We’d like to stay here until we can ride safely to Wanganui.”

“Not possible, I’m afraid,” he said. “You can take ten minutes to water the horses, and then you must leave. You’ll be at the stockade in twenty minutes. I can’t have you interfering with our preparations.”

“We’ll stay here for twenty minutes,” said Frank. He had no need of the extra ten minutes, but he wasn’t going to be told what to do by a captain who had purchased his commission and had probably never seen a fight.

Exactly twenty minutes had passed when the gates to the redoubt opened and the three of them galloped out on their ride to Wanganui.
