The Following Morning
Catherine rushed to make herself presentable for the duke, who was waiting for her in the drawing room. She knew that he was most likely going to ask for her hand in marriage. As there was no male of the house to answer to, and she was over the age of consent, it was up to Catherine to either accept or refuse his betrothal.
Milly put the finishing touches to her mistressâs hair and stood back to assess her work. âYou look stunning, maâam. Now we must not keep the duke waiting any longer, the whole house is so excited, itâs not everyone who is lucky enough to nab a duke.â
âI havenât nabbed him yet, Milly.â
âOh, but you will, my lady, he is besotted with you.â
âNonsense, he sees that I will make a suitable duchess, he as much as told me so.â
âThat might be the excuse heâs using but as far as your aunt and her friends are concerned he wants you.â
âOh, I know that, I am not some ninny hammer, or some green miss just out of the school room, but his reasons for asking me to marry him are nothing to do with the heart.â
âWell, as long as you say yes, and your aunt says you must, thatâs all that matters. As she says it is an honour you cannot refuse, and it will elevate all the family.â
âIncluding her of course.â
âYes, but it is the right thing to do, my lady, and no other woman in your place would not say no. Heâs a good catch and thatâs no mistake, now we had better hurry.â
Alex watched Catherine walk into the drawing room, dressed in a navy blue woollen gown. She was immaculate in her attire, she always knew exactly what to wear, what to say, what to do. He would never find himself a better choice for a duchess.
âLady Catherine, I wonder if I might have a word.â
Catherine seated herself opposite the man in the other apricot damask chair, âof course, what is it you wanted to talk about?â Catherine watched the man raise a brow, before speaking.
âI think you already know the answer to that question, Lady Catherine.â
Catherineâs cheeks burned, which brought her impatience to the fore. âI think I would like to hear you say it, all the same.â
Alex gave the woman an impatient look. He was not good at showing his feelings and so he made it look like it was nothing more than an arranged marriage, even if he had never wanted a woman the way he wanted her.
âI would like you to be my wife, my duchess.â
âWhy?â
He realised she was not going to make it easy for him. âI think you will do an excellence job as my duchess. You have a commanding way about you, which you will need to make sure you can show your authority over those who should obey you. Also, you will be in charge of committees and charities, both here in London and at my family seat.
