As soon as Greg approached Herder’s house, he knew it was empty. He checked his watch. After Michael received the called from the brat, it had taken around fifty minutes to arrive at Herder’s property.

Worse, there was no way of knowing which direction they headed.

In the rear-view mirror, he watched Michael skid to a stop, get out of the car and barge toward the front door. Sighing, knowing he wouldn’t be able to keep Michael from going inside, Greg followed.

“It’s locked,” Michael told him.

He shoved Michael aside, pulled the Glock from his shoulder holster, and planted a kick beside the pathetic lock on Herder’s door. The wood cracked, but held. He kicked it again, and this time it flew open, banging against the interior wall.

For Michael’s benefit, Greg held the gun out in front of him and entered the house as if he expected someone to leap out.

Michael’s footsteps followed him inside as he made a show of performing a sweep of the small house. Herder wasn’t an idiot. They would have hightailed it the moment they knew the brat contacted Michael.

But he did find something of interest when he checked the bathroom: a box of brown hair dye. So the bitch had changed her hair colour. Grabbing the box from the bin, he hurried into the living area and found Michael staring through the sliding glass doors that faced the rear of the property.

He joined his brother and handed him the empty box. “She’s a brunette now.”

Michael stared at the box for a moment, then settled his gaze outside again. When Greg followed his brother’s line of sight, his scrotum tightened. Outside, the type of boxing dummy he’d seen at the gym stared back without eyes, its chest pierced with bullet holes. The ugly thing had to be a message from Herder.

A message warning him of what was to come.

Greg suppressed a smile.

“How well did you say you knew this guy?” Michael asked.

“Barely. We were both up for that promotion I got a while back, but his wife died. He totally lost it. Quit. Haven’t seen him since.” Not a single lie there, he thought, proud of himself.

Michael crushed the box and looked at Greg. “Is he going to be a problem?”

“Nah. Guy’s a soft cock.” He stared at the dummy, unsure of whether or not that was a lie.

“There has to be something here that can tell us where he’s taken them.”

“You take the bedroom,” Greg said. “I’ll take this room.”

He slipped inside before Michael could protest, hoping he’d chosen the correct room. When he’d swept the house, he’d noticed the master bedroom was sparsely decorated. He’d taken a quick look in the wardrobe and found a gun safe open, clothes missing. But when he’d checked the other room, he’d noticed boxes and a wardrobe so overstuffed with crap, the door stood slightly ajar.

Greg walked over to the gym bench and picked up the photo that lay on top. He smirked when he saw Herder and his pretty wife, so happy, not an inkling of how things would eventually turn out for them.
