Álex and Karla left the morgue and headed towards their car in the underground parking lot.

“I’m sorry, I lost my temper,” Álex apologized.

“Well, congratulations,” Karla replied seriously. “At least you didn’t punch the table.”

He stopped to look at her, but she continued walking while talking.

“By the way, you and your ‘friend’ Alba… you both seemed different today.”

“Different? I don’t know what you mean,” said Álex, quickening his pace.

“Yes, very different, I don’t know… even…” Karla trailed off as she noticed someone looking at their car.

She extended her right arm to stop Álex and motioned for him to be quiet. Their Seat Altea was parked at the far end of the lot, in an isolated area due to the high number of cars that Tuesday.

With his back turned, a man stood in front of the vehicle, looking down as if searching for something.

The two officers drew their guns. They aimed at him and shouted when they were a few meters away.

“Police, raise your hands!”

The man stopped and slowly lifted his gaze and hands, one holding a lit phone.

“Turn around!”

The man complied.

“Guys, have you lost your minds or what?” the man said as he turned around.

When they saw his face, the officers lowered their guns.

“Mario, what the hell are you doing in front of our car?” Karla snapped.

“I was calling you,” he said as Álex’s phone started ringing.

“Seriously, Mario…” Álex said, putting away his gun.

“But come on, guys, do you really think Néstor could get in here?” Mario questioned.

The two investigators exchanged glances.

“You have no idea what he’s capable of,” Álex said. “I’d be less presumptuous and more cautious; you don’t know who you’re dealing with.”

Mario exaggerated a gesture of disbelief.

“What did you want?” asked Karla.

“I’ve just come from the car depot upstairs and saw something I think you should see,” Mario said enthusiastically.

“We’re in a hurry, Mario, what is it?” Mario thought momentarily, then replied, “You have to see it; it’s important,” and started walking away without another word.

Karla rolled her eyes, and Álex shrugged.

Mario opened the door.

“Come on! Let’s go. We don’t have all day!” The two officers followed him to the first floor.

“This is a work of art,” Mario said, fascinated.

Álex tilted his head.

“This was used to kill someone, Mario; I wouldn’t give it so much credit.”

“Anyway, look here…” Mario said, touching the structure with a blue glove.

They were in the garage where Álex’s Mini had been parked just a few days earlier. It had been completely dismantled to see if Néstor had hidden a bug or receiver.

In the end, the car turned out to be clean, but unfortunately, Álex’s memory was not.

That car had marked an era of his life, just like Mary.

Mario ran his hand over the metal tubes.

The structure was triangular with a square base and equipped with large wheels. On top was an arm with the hook from which the man had been hung.

“Do you know what material this is made of?” asked the scientist.

“Iron?” Álex guessed.

“No, aluminum.”

“Isn’t that the same thing?” Karla inquired.

“No!” Mario replied emphatically, almost offended.
