Logan slammed his fist into the wall. Already raw and split from the beating he gave Bournestein, a thin scab broke free and blood stained the plaster wall in his changing room.
After leaving the Jokerâs Roost in flames, he and his men had been to every single one of Bournesteinâs brothels, ale rooms, and gaming hells, searching for his wife. All night. All day. And into the darkness again.
She was nowhere to be found.
His men, ragged and soot-stained, had all needed rest. He needed rest.
He needed to clean the soot and dirt from his skin and come up with a clear thought. A clear thought would lead to a clear plan.
He had just laid a bitter swath of destruction and he was no closer to finding Sienna than when he started. Not only that, he had dragged his men deep into the fray. By the graces, his men had only suffered two broken bones and five gashes that needed stitches. The bruises and cuts were numerous.
Logan looked down at his fingers, exhaling a low whistle as he shook his hand, the sting in the sharp bones of his knuckles going deep.
Clear thoughts.
Bath. Sleep. Clear thoughts.
Logan yanked down his trousers and stepped gingerly into the cool water of his copper-lined bathing tub. Heâd been lucky that one of his guards had sent over a maid with food from the Revelryâs Tempest and sheâd happily filled his tub for an extra crown while he ate in stony silence.
He hadnât been in the tub for ten minutesâjust barely scrubbed the blood from underneath his fingernailsâwhen he heard a floorboard creak in his hallway.
Blast it. How had anyone gotten into his house? Greyson had insisted on staying watch in front of his house with another two of his guards watching the mews.
Logan looked to his left to see a ragamuffin boy of maybe eight years old standing in the doorway, staring at him. Dirty and scrawny, the boy nervously twisted his fingers together in front of him.
âHow did you get in here, boy?â
âI followed ye. I followed ye all night, sir. And when yer maid left the door open to get water from the well and chatted with that monster of a man in front, I snuck in by them. I followed ye from the Jokerâs Roost, I did, sir.â
âYou were at the Jokerâs Roost?â
âI was, sir. I saw ye in the alley with Mr. Bournestein. And ye be a hero, sir. A true hero. I saw what ye did to âim. I know plenty in his streets that would want to be ye getting to hit âim.â The boy paused, his fingers lifting to tuck the dirty strands of his too-long hair behind his ears. âAnd I heard what ye want. Ye want the pretty lady. The one with the strawberry hair and sweet skin.â
Logan sat straight up in the tub. âYou saw her? The woman with the red-blond hair?â
âKinda red, kinda blond, sir? She was with Mr. Bournesteinâs men yesterday. She didnât look none happy, sir.
