Lady Ayers’ dinner party. Clarissa could hardly believe Lord Uxbridge had actually managed to get Clarissa, her aunt, and her uncle invited.

The members of the Wagering Whist Society were the queens of the beau monde, nearly surpassing the prestige of the Lady Patronesses of Almack’s.

Almack’s, naturally, was closed to Clarissa because of a dislike one of the patronesses had taken to Lady Morley, but an invitation to a party hosted by one of the founders of the Ladies’ Waging Whist Society... It still baffled Clarissa that such a thing had come about.

Her aunt had been running around all morning, ensuring Clarissa’s new gown was perfect and that her own was impeccable. She’d even discussed what Uncle Lawrence would be wearing with his valet.

Thank goodness the lady was now in her bath in preparation for the evening. Clarissa had bathed earlier that morning, and she thought Aunt Lily might have even convinced Uncle Lawrence to bathe as well—despite the fact that he didn’t believe it healthy to do so more than once a fortnight, and he’d bathed the previous week after church.

Clarissa ran her hairbrush through her still-damp hair, attempting to both dry and straighten it so it would be easier for her maid to pin up later.

And there was to be dancing. This was a good thing. Clarissa sincerely hoped Lord Uxbridge would ask her to dance. If he did, she thought, she would be able to determine if what she’d felt at Lady Preston’s was just a touch of transient madness or if it was real. Was it a trick of the moment or... Clarissa got up and moved farther away from the fire. She was getting much too warm.

A knock on the door happily interrupted her thoughts. A maid came in, bearing a small silver tray.

“I beg your pardon, miss, but this came with the post this morning. It accidentally got mixed in with his lordship’s mail.”

“Oh, thank you.” Clarissa took the letter and then sighed. It was from Frederick.

She had done nothing about her brother’s request that she speak to Uncle Lawrence about paying for Frederick to go to Eton. That pang of guilt nagged at her as she opened his letter. It was brief.

Clarissa,

I have not heard back from you regarding my request that you speak with our uncle on my behalf. I, therefore, must assume that you have not done so.

I know you tend to avoid unpleasant tasks in the hopes that they will just disappear. This one won’t.

However, if you do not—or cannot—speak with him, you may be sure that I will. In person. This is not something that can be done via post—I’ve been trying that for years to no avail. No, if you won’t speak with him for me, I will have no choice but to come to London to speak with him myself.

I expect to hear back from you forthwith.

Clarissa dropped her head against the back of the chair. What was she to do? She couldn’t ask Uncle Lawrence, not when he was currently spending so much money on her so she could make a good match.
