CHAPTER 6

Looking back at the room where Lacey got ready for her last meal, Sandy shut the door on the one person who had loved her unconditionally. She descended the steps and set her suitcase down at the desk to check out.

Mary entered the lobby with a loud huff and deposited a bag on the reception desk. She smiled at Sandy. “I’m so glad to see you up, honey. The doctor said I could stop giving you the pills, and you should take it easy for a day or two.”

Sandy pasted a smile on her face, hoping it would make it to her voice. “Thank you for taking care of me. I feel much better now and am ready to go.”

Mary turned, her attention on the suitcase. “Go? Right now?” She smoothed her hair back, and her brows furrowed in grandmotherly concern.

“Yes. I feel ready to travel. I am very well rested. Should I drop by the sheriff’s office on the way out?”

“I . . . well . . . I don’t think he needs to talk with you. The case is closed. It was confirmed that Ben killed your friend. He worked at Miss Snyder’s lawyer’s office and followed her here. You never know with people, do you? She must have rejected him, and—well, that’s in the past.”

Sandy shook her head, unable to speak her friend’s truth without everyone questioning her sanity, probably delaying her departure. “I sure hope they’re right and the real killer didn’t leave.”

Mary’s expression softened. “We don’t need to worry about a killer running loose, thank goodness. Are you headed home?”

Sandy shook her head. “I called my family and told them I was okay, but I’m not going home. I plan to finish the trip Lacey and I started.” She brushed away a couple of stray tears.

Mary put a hand on Sandy’s shoulder. “Do you think that’s a good idea? Going off by yourself? You should let your family take care of you.”

A calm settled over Sandy as a feather floated down and landed at her feet. She reached down and put it in her jeans pocket. “I will carefully consider what you said, Mary, but I must do what’s right for me now.”

Mary’s eyes were on her pocket where she’d put the feather. “I understand. I know you’ll be careful whom you choose to be around. From now on, I think we all will. Hang on to the feather. It means an angel is watching over you.”

Sandy smiled. “Yes, that’s what I’ve heard too. I know Lacey is keeping an eye on me. There was this dream I had. I know this sounds crazy, and maybe the pills affected me, but a young woman named Annie came to me. She insisted I tell you that she’s with you and loves you. Does that mean anything to you?”

Mary’s complexion turned chalky white. Sandy thought she might faint. “Yes. It does, thank you. She was our daughter. She died at four months old.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry, Mary.
