CHAPTER 9

Assigning Roles and Responsibilities

As soon as you determine to do a design studio, you need to decide who will participate. The product team can help you to assign roles and responsibilities to specific people.

All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players:

They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages.

– William Shakespeare’s As You Like It

Three Roles in a Design Studio

Towards the end of your problem-definition meeting, you need to ask the meeting attendees for a commitment to participate in the design studio. You should review the estimated time required and reinforce the benefits of participation. Some people will enthusiastically volunteer, while other people will be assigned.

In some cases, you may discover that a key person gets assigned to the design studio, but they were not in the problem-definition meeting. Your introductory email to this person should contain all of the necessary information to get them familiar with the problem, and to get started on their sketches. Be sure to include all your contact information, and even suggest that the new person give you a call to review the materials together.

Tip #1:

Do not assume everyone will volunteer. Some people will be assigned.
