Chapter Eleven

Zai

It was difficult not to lament how fucking dumb I was as Masie drove us back to her place. Thank god she’d signed up for the man I was, otherwise she might have gone running in the opposite direction. Even though I probably shouldn’t even tell Ven about my misunderstanding when Masie said her parents weren’t home, I felt like it was the punishment I deserved.

And after what he’d been through lately, he deserved the laugh.

Was I leaning a little too hard into my embarrassment because I didn’t want to think about my feelings for Shayne versus Masie, and where Masie and I were headed currently was a little definitive? Maybe. I was still so uncertain of what I wanted, but at the same time, things were also very clear? I adored Masie, always had and probably always would, but things with Shayne were just different. When I thought of the possibility that anything I did with Masie could potentially ruin any chance I had with Shayne, it made me not want to do it.

Yet at the same time, every time Masie looked at me with those puppy dog eyes that I’d slowly fallen for over the last several years, the kid in me who’d always crushed on her strangled my brain between his fists and begged me not to screw this up.

At this point, I wouldn’t know right from wrong if it walked up to me dressed like Vanna White with a mostly completed Wheel of Fortune board.

“My parents are in Barbados,” Masie said after a long period of silence as we drove. “They’ve been saying they wanted to take a trip alone forever, but they’re so paranoid and didn’t want to leave me home alone, but because I’m graduating soon and my cousin is staying with us right now, they figured they could go. But my dad, he’s all crazy about good deals and stuff, so he decided to take advantage of some cheap flights and hotel stays because it’s so close to the end of the school year. They’re coming back two days before graduation. Can you believe that?” She snickered. “Thank god I’m a good kid, otherwise I could totally fuck off these last few weeks. I have all of my credits already. Senioritis doesn’t even begin to cover how I feel right now.”

“Oh!” I said, a little too excitedly. “Is your cousin here right now?”

She side-eyed me. “No. He kinda goes ghost from time to time. No idea where he goes, but you know, he’s going through a lot, so I don’t ask questions. I know it’s not drugs or anything like that, I just think he’s kind of a loner who likes to be by himself sometimes. That’s why he likes staying with us so much, because we don’t pressure him. We give him space when he needs it.”

“Ah.” I forced a smile and chuckled. “Good.”

Her grin widened. “I think so.”

Frick. I wasn’t doing a good job of trying to cool things off.
