Chapter eleven

John

I used a discarded hockey stick to pop open the door on the boathouse where the ice skate rental stand was. This was either completely brilliant or the dumbest thing I’d ever done. And I was going to end up bleeding out on the frozen water of St. Moritzersee Lake.

“You have the linens?” I shoved into the building and searched for cameras. There was one pointed at the cash register but no others. We should have a few minutes before they tracked us out here. Hopefully the dead guy would stay hidden for a while.

“Yes. But I have no idea why.” Kira dropped the bag of freshly delivered and now stolen tablecloths and napkins on the ground next to a long bench near the shelves of ice skates.

“Camouflage.” I’d noticed the laundry bag near a service entry when I stalked the waiter.

I quickly found the skates in our sizes while Kira ripped open the bag of pressed, starched white linen.

I tossed her a knife—not the one I’d used on the dead guy. “Find two big tablecloths and cut holes for our heads.”

I laced up my skates and hung my boots by the laces around my neck. Despite her trembling hands, Kira did the same, and we helped each other put on our tablecloth ponchos.

A better man with a romantic soul would have had the right words to say at this moment to give her courage. I didn’t. Instead, I cupped her cold face in my hands and pressed a hard kiss to her lips. “We’ve got this.”

She nodded, looking unsure, and it bolstered my resolve. The plan would work. We would survive, and I’d earn her trust tonight. Or die trying. I never wanted to see her afraid again.

“Let’s go out the back.” I tottered on my blades toward the back door that led directly to the frozen lake.

“Wait. Put this on.”

I turned, and she held out a white beanie. It had bunny ears and a cotton ball tail. I tugged the kid-sized hat on. I’d be a bunny if it kept me from getting my head blown off. The one on her actually looked kind of cute.

The lake was the town’s winter playground and home to everything from a polo match to a car race. It also had a long, winding ice-skating path that meandered around the lake to different access points.

The night was pitch black, but every glimmer of available light reflected off the massive expanse of the frozen lake. I took Kira’s gloved hand in mine, and we set off on the ice. A few awkward strides and we both found our rhythm. I may hate the cold, but I grew up on the ice and in the snow.

My back tingled as I imagined a long-range sniper’s bullet slicing through me at any moment. As the distance between the hotel and us increased, my wariness ebbed.

The cold air burned my face, and I checked on Kira. She looked good, better than she had since I killed the Russian.
