Eating is eating, we have all done it. We know the process of ripping, chewing, swallowing, and enjoying, filling our stomachs, and returning back to true form; able to control our tempers. Back to energetic, able to focus, us. Able to not want to viciously rip the skin from a boy we are somewhat attracted to and run our tongues over his shivering muscle fibers. This may be just me (and, if my detective skills are correct, one other person out there who bit me to turn me into the new me) but I want to say that after getting through two pounds of the several pounds of red deliciousness before me, I was back to talking regularly, had a full stomach, and the ability to move without feeling like everything was dry rotting inside of me.

Max, at first, watched curiously from outside of the driver’s window, then found a nice cozy spot leaning against the hood of his truck, looking out on the grocery store parking lot. At first, I thought he was so disgusted and revolted by seeing me eat that he had to just turn away, but then I realized he was keeping a look out. He would keep his eyes on cars that would pass by slowly, almost daring them to stop, not realizing that everyone driving through the parking lot was actually going slowly to find a spot. Who knows what would have happened if either of the cars next to us pulled out of their spot, and a new suitor had to pull in. I could see Max having some very aggressive altercation with them, marking his territory with his scrawny biceps, and his bravado, and making sure nobody saw his lady friend in the cab of his truck, watery blood dripping down off of her chin. We apparently parked in a spot next to two slow shoppers or employees, so we didn’t have to worry about that.

While I was chewing the last bite I had decided to take, I easily unbuckled my seat belt, and let my binding recoil back behind my right shoulder. I used one of the blue bags as a trash bag, placing the empty, bloody Styrofoam containers into it, tying it up, and placing it on the floor by my feet. What was it about the blood replacement last night, and the red meat today, that has me so… me? Every time I get dim-witted, get thick-tongued, am I going to have to go into the meat aisle and slobber all over some raw T-bone?

Well, regardless of what is happening to me, it’s over, and before I start sinking into another moment of absolute embarrassment, I pull the inside handle to my door, and gently step out of the car. The sunlight hits the wind, which hits my face first, and even though it feels too warm for comfort, it still, somehow, feels good. I look over to Max as I shut the door, and squint in the brightness toward him, wondering what should be my first words after such a demoralizing display of character.
