CHAPTER NINETEEN

Todd's heart pounded as Sandberg veered off the road and into the dense, foreboding forest. The substitute teacher moved with an eerie, single-minded purpose, as if drawn by an invisible force.

Shirley followed without hesitation, her face set in grim determination. Todd trailed behind them, his stomach twisting with dread.

The trees loomed overhead, their branches reaching out like gnarled fingers. The air grew colder as they ventured deeper into the woods, and a thick mist crept along the forest floor, curling around their ankles.

Every instinct screamed at Todd to turn back, to run as far and as fast as he could. But he couldn't abandon Sandberg, not when the man was clearly in the grip of something sinister.

The only sounds were the crunch of dead leaves beneath their feet and the occasional snap of a twig.

Todd's breath came in short, sharp gasps, his lungs burning with the effort.

Sandberg stumbled over a root, nearly falling, but he caught himself at the last moment and pressed on, his movements jarring and bumbling.

Todd's skin crawled with the sensation of being watched. He scanned the shadows, half-expecting to see the ghostly figure of the dead boy lurking behind a tree.

But there was nothing. Just the oppressive darkness and the suffocating silence.

Shirley muttered something under her breath, her words lost in the gloom. Todd strained to hear her, but the pounding of his own heart drowned out everything else.

The mist thickened, swirling around them in an otherworldly dance. It clung to Todd's skin, cold and clammy, like the touch of a corpse.

He shuddered, fighting the urge to turn and flee.

But he couldn't leave Sandberg, not like this. Not when the man was so clearly in need of help.

So Todd gritted his teeth and pressed on, following Shirley and Sandberg deeper into the heart of the forest, towards whatever dark fate awaited them.

Todd's heart raced as he followed Shirley and the entranced Sandberg deeper into the menacing forest. The trees seemed to close in around them, their gnarled branches reaching out like twisted fingers.

The air grew colder with each step, sending shivers down Todd's spine.

A thick, unnatural mist swirled around their feet, obscuring the path ahead.

It clung to Todd's skin, damp and clammy, like the touch of a corpse. The only sounds were the crunch of dead leaves beneath their feet and the occasional snap of a twig, each noise amplified in the eerie stillness.

Todd's breath came in short, sharp gasps, his lungs burning with the effort.

Every instinct screamed at him to turn back, to run as far and as fast as he could. But he couldn't abandon Sandberg, not when the man was clearly in the grip of something sinister.

Shadows danced at the edges of Todd's vision, and he couldn't shake the feeling of being watched.

A cold sweat trickled down his back.

"Hold it together, for fucks sake," Shirley muttered, her voice barely audible above the pounding of his heart.

Todd swallowed hard, his mouth dry with fear. He wanted to ask how she knew, but the words stuck in his throat.
