CHAPTER EIGHT

"IN A MASS GRAVE."

Randy was both the owner and the operator of the Phasma Box. It was running on his laptop computer, hooked up to an external speaker. He had it working in no time, and we all gathered round in the dark expectantly. Most ITC devices take a little time to 'warm up,' so to speak, usually requiring at least a few minutes in order to shake themselves out and begin making any kind of sense. Not so in the cellar of the Waring House. Whoever or whatever was active down there seemed only too eager to communicate with us.

ITC sessions generally start off with a few standard test questions, just to get the ball rolling, such as asking whether there are any spirits present who wished to talk with us, and then asking a little bit about themselves and their background.

Chilly wind, said a male-sounding voice. Considering that the weather was freezing cold, not to mention the fact that we could hear the wind howling around the eaves of the house, I was willing to call that first statement a hit. Needless to say, I would have been considerably less impressed if the Phasma Box had said the exact same thing on a hot, still evening in July rather than a cold night in February. These are the kind of things that ought to confound the arguments of those skeptics who insist that nothing meaningful comes through ITC devices such as this, and that every such 'communication' is nothing more than audible pareidolia, the human brain tricking itself into thinking that it hears something meaningful in what is actually nothing more than a random jumble of noises.

If a statement made by a voice from the Phasma Box (or any other purported spirit communication device) could be corroborated by something objective from the outside world -- in this case, the fact that the night was both chilly and windy -- then it made for rather compelling evidence, in my opinion.

After this promising start, things suddenly took a turn toward the nasty. Robbin took her turn asking a few questions, inquiring whether the spirits had to remain down there in the basement or whether they were able to move around the house and gardens.

Another male voice, different in tone and timbre from the first, jumped in and replied to her with a shocking obscenity:

YOU C---!

We were all taken aback by this sudden, unexpected burst of verbal abuse. Robbin had been speaking politely and respectfully, fully aware that we were operating on what was, for all intents and purposes, sacred ground. Because of this, the entire team had agreed that no provocative or antagonistic questioning techniques were going to be used. Disrespecting spirit entities is almost always a bad idea (not to mention just plain bad form) and while it can yield results, sometimes those results are not the kind that you want. I have personally seen scratches and other physical injuries ensue because a paranormal investigator got a little too big for his or her boots and decided to mouth off to the spirits during an ITC session.
