Grapevines, left to right: Carving Brigham Young’s Beehive House, and Gold grapevines, Salt Lake Temple east doors

John the Revelator speaks more boldly of the destruction of the wicked and the foolish who have received the mark of the beast in the forehead or in their hand, stating, Thrust in they sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden without the city [like the red heifer sacrifice—eastward on the mount of Olives], and the blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles” (Revelation 14:18-20). The Kidron Valley between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives is the place where this blood prophecy will be fulfilled, also called the Valley of Jehoshaphat (Jehovah’s judgment).132

A number of traditions express that the fruit in the Garden of Eden was not an apple or even fig, but the grape. The Zohar states, “Again it has been said, that one who dreams that he has eaten black grapes can be certain that he will enter the world to come. Why? The clue is to be found in the tradition that the forbidden fruit which was eaten by Adam and Eve was the grape, the fruit of vine, for it is written: ‘their grapes are grapes of gall’ (Deuteronomy 32:32)—namely the black [dark red] grapes.”133

It should also be remembered that a great golden vine with grape clusters the size of a man was placed over the entrance to Herod’s Temple (the Second Temple), one of at least 8 symbols for Christ evident in the ancient Tabernacle (see chapter 6). Perhaps while viewing this vine the Lord stated, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.” Later in verse 5 he adds, “…ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:1, 5).

Last, Boren has pointed out that turning water to wine was Christ’s first miracle (Luke 22:17); that Abraham went to King Melchizedek to pay his tithing and then was offered with bread and wine (Genesis 14:18), “foreshadowing the sacramental meal to come;” And that it was the good Samaritan of Luke 10:34 “who dressed the beaten man’s wounds with wine and oil.” Wine was also offered upon the temple altar as a drink offering. His words at the last supper represent the cup of blessing and are most appropriate, “This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” In verse 18 he states, “I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come,” potentially part of a Nazarite-like vow (Luke 22:17-20).134

Red Lines Red lines appear in several places in scripture, with potential connection to Christ’s sacrifice and His sacred bloodline as God’s Firstborn Son.
