One afternoon, Jesus motioned to Peter and James and John to join him, and they went up the hill to pray. The three watched over Christ, standing a little distance away as they had done before. Suddenly they noticed that his face was radiant with light and that his clothes had changed to a luminescent white. And, while they watched, Moses and Elias came from above and conversed with Jesus. They were in halos of glory, and the three apostles looked and shut their blinded eyes and looked again.

Peter and James and John were overcome with awe, and they felt a drowsiness descend on them. When they awakened, they still saw Moses and Elias, but they were about to leave. Peter said: “Master, it is well that we are here….” As he spoke, a cloud enveloped the apostles like a warm mist. They heard a voice ring out from above: “This is my son, the chosen one. Listen to him!”

The cloud dissipated. The voice ceased. The three apostles looked around. They were alone with Jesus. For a long time afterward, they told no one of what they had seen.

On still another day, the people of a town not only came to the road to meet Jesus, but they brought with them their babies and their children. The apostles, who tried to surround Jesus with a proprietary air, walked ahead and scolded the parents for all the noise the children made. Jesus hurried toward the center of the disturbance, and stopped the apostles. Then he looked at all of the infants and children, some of whom were shy, some of whom held his garment, and some of whom took a look at him and burst into tears.

Jesus’ broadest smile of all appeared at this moment. Gently, his voice husky with emotion, he said: “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Yes, I assure you: he who does not accept the kingdom of God as a little child does will never enter it.”
