There’s a certain feeling you get when you know the shoe is about to drop. It’s like a sudden pull in the atmosphere, a changing of the tides, a gut feeling that something big is coming. That maybe it could fix everything.

This battlefield we stand on is built on love, destroyed by it just the same. We’re all merely pawns in a life-sized game of chess, like tiny soldiers taking the first bullets on the front lines, and if we’re lucky, one of us will still be standing in the end.

There’s no telling who it will be.

Roses are red,

I watched as he bled.

Violets are blue,

I did it just for you.

Ivy’s latest declaration of love settles into my core.

This poem, this tiny piece of paper derived from fifty-seven letters to form seventeen words, is the admission of guilt I’ve been waiting for. And it’s the closest she’ll ever come to a confession.

I read through it at least a hundred more times, soaking up the meaning of the prose, the not-so-well-hidden connotation buried within. I won’t allow myself to make too much of it, I know I’m the only one who’ll understand its value.

At least for me, these words bring closure. They give meaning to what I’ve put in motion, give me purpose again.

It’s just a matter of time now.

The storm is coming.
