Jack called Mendelson, told him he was reviewing the suitability of someone Mendelson had known for a senior government role. Mendelson was standoffish and dismissive, then his tone changed when Jack told him the man’s name was Stiglitz. He said he would appreciate the opportunity to discuss him, and would make time that afternoon. Jack couldn’t help thinking he was going to talk to someone who had a score to settle.

After he’d called Mendelson he rang Coty and told him Nate’s theory that one of the bodies might have been frozen, and that this could explain the different burn rates. He asked him if they could arrange an autopsy.

Coty made a snorting sound. “God knows where Stiglitz is buried. I’ll find out. Guess the weather’s been cold so there might not be much decomposition. How would they tell if he’d frozen to death before he was set on fire?”

“Extended cellular spaces? Shrunken cells? Let’s ask them. They can look through a microscope at a tissue sample. Also, Nate said to check the lungs for smoke particles. If they’re clean it means he wasn’t breathing when the fire started. So was already dead.”

“Ok, makes sense. Good call. And pathologists love a challenge, morbid bastards. I’ll get on it. What time will you be back from Ithaca?”

“Some time after nine.”

“When you get back come and meet me at The Ascot at 517 Thirteenth. I’m having dinner with someone. You should be there too.”

“Who is it?” Jack asked. There was a pause.

“General Arthur Carvell. Henry’s father. He’s in town. Thought you might like to meet him.”
