At least we got out of the dungeon for a minute
The guards had their backs to the hole. The cheetah turned as soon as we stepped through. âHurry, you need to move quickly.â
Toby flew up into the air. âIâll take watch.â
The guard scanned the area as we hustled over to a wagon. The masked individual jumped into the back and pulled open a door in the floor. âGet in.â
I looked at Riya and Gideon, and both of them just shrugged. It wasnât like we had a lot of other options. So into the hidey-hole we went. It was a tight squeeze for the three of us, but we had no time to complain. As soon as we all squeezed in, the door closed over us.
It was perfectly dark when the door was shut. Something heavy thudded on the hidden door. We lay there holding our breath. No one spoke, but I think we all expected to be found at any moment.
The wagon started to move. The three of us rolled as it set in motion. I banged my elbow into Riya and then a moment later banged the other elbow into the top of the box. Gideon rolled and managed to slam the top of his skull into the bottom of my chin. âOw.â
Then we all managed to somewhat brace ourselves. It was hard to hear over the sound of our own anxious breathing and the noise of the steam engine. The wagon stopped at one point. I thought for sure that the jig was up. But after a few tense minutes, we continued again on our way. Then we drove for another thirty minutes. My heart felt like it was going to leap out of my chest the whole time. Where were we going? And who exactly was helping us?
The wagon stopped. Riya reached over and squeezed my hand. I squeezed it back. It looked like we had arrived.
I tensed as the heavy object was pulled off the door. The door opened only a few moments later. Sunlight broke through at the end of the wagon. Toby smiled down at us. âEverybody okay?â
I nodded and then looked at his two companions. Desmond had his back to us, staring out keeping watch, but Chopper looked over us anxiously. âAnybody hurt?â
