CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

THE SIDE

Mark took me to Lex’s loft. I packed a few things, making a show of it. In front of the building, I hugged him, then kissed his cheek. Hoping someone saw. Like Rick the goon. Felt certain other people were watching, too. Lex had arranged a spotter. I felt safe enough. We’d contacted Dot to help put together the crew. No choice there. She could be watching me, overseeing the setup. Making sure we were playing it right. Maybe Sue Marshall had eyes on us, too. I still didn’t know what she wanted from me.

I waved Mark off, insisting I could Uber home. He’d be in touch. Soon. Poor Mark. Not hard to understand how quickly he fell for Penny. She probably read him faster than I did. Major white knight complex. Mark was so sincere. So upright. Platinum had really picked the wrong dupe. I just couldn’t understand how someone as tough as Penny had fallen for him.

Maybe sincere and upright were too alien for me.

My part was done for the day. Time to lose the eyeballs.

I Ubered to Lenox Mall in Buckhead. Spent time in Macy’s. In and out of dressing rooms. Shopping but making quick turns between aisles. Bobbing in and out of sight for anyone who watched. Typical Sunday crowds. Easy to hide in.

Ducked into the movie theater. Into a bathroom. Out the back door. Snuck through the parking lot with my new clothes on. Ball cap. Sunglasses. Hopped on MARTA. Switched trains downtown. Got off at Inman Park. Caught another Uber to Penny’s car.

Thank the stars. The Honda had been in the lot for a week. Ticket, but no boot. I knew people who could un-boot a car, but I didn’t want to involve anyone else nor take the time.

Tossed the ticket. Checked the car. Headed out of Atlanta. I had a funny feeling about a cop and coroner who arrived on scene like that. Likely story about the neighbor, too.

I still wanted that death certificate. If there were no investigation into Penny’s demise, that certificate would be filed away without notice. I could anonymously send the copy to an interested party, thereby bringing attention to Penny’s murder. If all Mark said was true, it would bring him justice. Throw more shade at these gangsters. And possibly at a shady sheriff and corrupt coroner.

Poor, gullible Mark.

But gullible Mark was stealing from Platinum. That’s how they’d see it, anyway. Was that naïveté or something else? His father was a judge who oversaw criminal trials. At the dinner table, Judge Davis must have shared organized crime stories. Like I grew up hearing about arrests. At least, the arrests who hadn’t paid or traded information to escape their bust.

Mark must know the consequences for ripping off a mobster. I reflected on that for a minute. Maybe the judge told the stories differently. Maybe Mark was innocent. He wasn’t stupid, but could he be that naïve?

One way to find out. Someone needed to keep an eye on Mark.
