Murphy House

My mother stood by the fireplace, her lithe figure silhouetted against the crackling flames. She turned her icy blue eyes on me, pursing her glossy lips.

“Must you continue to see that girl, Torin? The Murphy legacy is at stake here.”

“You needn’t concern yourself, Mother.”

“On the contrary,” she snapped. “As the matriarch of this family, your dalliances reflect on me. I will not have the Murphy name dragged through the dirt over some white trash harlot.”

She lightly slurred her last words, and I sat my drink on a crystal coaster. Maybe I shouldn’t support her drinking.

“You should be telling that to the Warners. They’re the ones encouraging her association with Heath. I, too, find it rather distasteful, but I’m sure they have their reasons.”

She glanced away and took a rather large swig of her cocktail, the pink hint of color on her cheeks blooming to red. What was this?

“A mistake if you ask me, regardless of what the database says,” she said firmly. “Who cares if there is Warner DNA there, it’s polluted!”

My eyes narrowed. A database? Why was I only just hearing about this? What else had my family kept from me?

“What are you talking about, DNA and databases?”

Mother worried her bottom lip, a crack in her usual composure. “Don’t ask questions, Torin. Forget I said that.”

I swallowed hard, struggling to keep my emotions in check. “Does Heath know about this database?”

Mother blanched, shaking her head, her hands twisting in her lap. “No, and you have to swear not to tell him, Torin.” She weaved her way over to me and grabbed my arms, her eyes wide. “Promise me you will not pursue this further.”

There it was. Confirmation that the Warners were involved in something else shady, beyond their connection with the Dark Ones. Rage boiled in my blood at the thought of them keeping this from not only me, but Heath, as well.

Mother’s grip on my arms tightened to the point her manicured nails almost pierced my flesh. “Promise, Torin! Promise you won’t say anything. You know what Helene is like. She could destroy us.”

Sighing heavily, I acknowledged her point. Neither my mother nor Heath’s were angels, but Helene Warner was the most deadly.

“It’s okay, mom. Your secret is safe with me.”

When she relaxed against me, I guided her to the sofa where she immediately passed out. Must have had even more than I realized. I turned her onto her side and left a note with a maid to look after her before I left for Ravenswood, wondering what the hell Heath’s parents were up to now.
