Chapter Eighteen

Michael stared at her, his mind spinning. She was speaking so calmly, as if they were discussing the latest football game.

“Well, that’s it. You can’t go alone.”

“Why not?”

“Are you crazy?” he demanded. “You can’t seriously be thinking about going into a trap alone! If they catch you, and they will, they will torture you. Do you understand me? They won’t shoot you. They will hang you from your fingernails and slice and dice you until you’re in pieces, but still breathing. “

“Why, gunny, if I didn’t know better I’d say you were trying to scare me.”

“You should be scared! These people are serious!”

“So am I.” Her voice sliced through the room harshly and Michael felt a chill go through him. “They’ve done God knows what to Hawk. I’ll take my pound of flesh from them.”

“Not if they take theirs from you first.”

“I won’t be captured.”

Michael cursed and turned to face the fire, staring into the flames as he tried to get his frustration under control.

“It’s impossible. You know that,” he said over his shoulder. “You’re being stubborn. You can’t go into a prison that knows you’re coming, and bring someone out with you.”

“It’s been done before,” she said, walking over to pick up her water. “I breached a Taliban camp single-handedly to extract the head of MI6. I think I can take on a handful of Russian thugs.”

“Don’t underestimate them. The Ruskies are bastards.”

He turned his gaze back to the flames as she drank, clamping his teeth together. She hadn’t changed at all. She was still the obstinate, headstrong hero that insisted on doing it all herself. God save him from reckless control freaks! He inhaled deeply and turned to face her.

“If you’re determined to martyr yourself, so be it. But I’m also going after the SEAL. He has information I need, and I want him out just as much as you do.”

“I highly doubt that,” she said dryly.

“It’s the height of stupidity to not join forces and pool our resources and respective skill sets,” he continued, ignoring her. “You realize that.”

“Just stay out of it, Michael. You’re a spook. You gather intelligence. Leave the heavy lifting to me.”

Michael tamped down a flash of anger. She was baiting him on purpose. Why, he had no idea, but Viper was never nasty without a reason.

“You don’t really expect me to do that,” he said. “You know me too well. We haven’t changed that much over the years.”

She pondered him for a moment, her face unreadable, then she seemed to sigh.

“You shouldn’t be here, Michael,” she said quietly. “You have no idea what you’ve got yourself into. You don’t have to be mixed up in this. Walk away while you still can.”

“That’s not an option anymore. I have my job to do, just as you do.” He exhaled and took a step towards her. “Lina, you don’t have to protect me this time around. I’ll take care of myself.”

Her lips twisted sardonically and lifted her eyes to meet his.

“It’s not you I’m trying to protect.
