Dear Cal,

Urgent news. An army of at least a hundred Trolls, (not just Elrackon) is going to attack Ainon Caseia at midnight in twelve days. No time or room to explain the whole story. Source was good. It is vitally important that you take action. Also important: I discovered a spy at uncle’s inn, so any information passed through there in the last few weeks is not to be trusted. Sorry this is so short. When we meet in a few days, I’ll explain in greater detail.

Love,

Joran

He folded the letter and sealed it with a drop of wax and a strange symbol from a stamp on the desk. After attaching the letter to the leg of a pigeon and sending the bird through a window, he set to work making another copy. It was never bad to be prepared for the worst. Sending two letters would ensure that at least one got where it was supposed to. Turning from the desk with a sigh, he was startled to see Amischel and Hal, the bearded man, in the doorway.

“What’s the rush?” Hal asked, crossing his arms over his chest and raising an eyebrow quizzically.

“Something came up. I just got some rather unsettling news…” He outlined the basic information to them, and then explained that he had just sent a warning. Amischel listened quietly, not understanding fully what was going on, but grasping the fact that a lot of people were in danger somewhere.

“You never mentioned how you got this information,” Hal said, glancing around the walls, and not seeing any new birds.

“It’s kind of a secret,” Joran replied, blushing slightly, “You probably wouldn’t believe me…but you should know that my source is completely reliable.”

Hal nodded, turning away. In his position, you didn’t ask a lot of questions. Amischel was still looking at Joran. “Jenie said to tell you that supper won’t be ready anytime soon unless you help her to pick and wash the vegetables.”

He groaned and walked out the door with her and the bearded man. “Hal, your wife is altogether too clever. She knows all too well how to trick me into helping out with the chores.”

Hal just gave him a lopsided grin. “That’s my Jenie. She never passes up a chance to whip you into someone respectable.”

Joran groaned. “There’s nothing wrong with me the way I am now!”

“Actually,” Hal turned serious now, looking him over circumspectly, “You seem different from when we saw you last. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something’s changed. You’re more mature in some ways. Whatever it was that you’ve been doing for the last month while you were away, it’s changed you. Eventually I hope to hear the whole story.”

Joran looked at him in surprise, then turned away and shrugged. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m the same person I’ve always been.”

They walked back into the building and greeted a slim middle-aged woman with short brown hair. “If you want that vegetable stew of mine that you always rave about, you’d better get hopping.
