Chapter Fourteen

It took longer than anticipated to tear down and store the second tent. Every time Jake glanced at Beth, he found her watching him before lowering her gaze.

He’d hoped they would’ve had time to talk after everyone was sated from her excellent food. Instead, the storm moved in, squelching his plans.

And now he had to contend with Helena. Jake thought he’d been clear about finding friends near her home to share Thanksgiving. Then again, she’d always interpreted everything in her own, self-centered way, disregarding anyone’s wishes except her own.

Finished outside, he spotted Beth and Abigail heading back into the lodge. His sister knew Helena. Though they’d never been best friends, Abigail knew of Helena’s struggle with alcohol. What would she say when spotting his old girlfriend in the lodge?

Putting her up for the night would mean someone had to clean one of the vacant cabins. There was no doubt in his mind that someone would be him.

Shivering as a gust of snow slammed against him, he entered the lodge. The door to the kitchen stood open, soft voices wafted out into the dining room. He recognized Abigail’s voice, then Helena’s. A good sign.

Slowing his steps as he approached the kitchen, he cleared his throat. “I see you stayed right where I asked you to.”

“I was bored, Jake. You couldn’t have thought I’d just sit there until you returned.”

“That’s exactly what I expected, Helena.”

Abigail stood between the two, biting her lower lip. She understood Jake’s concern. Helena had a long history of pilfering items she could sell for alcohol. Glancing around, she saw nothing missing. Looking at Helena’s tight jeans and sweater, it would be hard to conceal anything.

“I’m hungry. Is it all right if I eat some of the food on the counter?”

Abigail nodded. “Of course, Helena. I’ll prepare a plate for you.”

“Then we need to figure out what to do with you.” The edge in Jake’s voice wasn’t missed on either woman.

Crossing her arms, Helena leaned against a counter. “You’re making me feel bad for coming. I thought you’d be thrilled to see me.”

Pinching the bridge of his nose, he shook his head. “I was clear you weren’t to come to Whistle Rock Ranch. The timing couldn’t be worse.”

“Well, I wanted to see you.” Taking the plate Abigail prepared, she picked up a slice of ham with her fingers. “Hmmm. This is delicious.” She picked up a fork and knife, scooping up red potatoes. “Everything is so good, Abbie. Are you the cook?”

“Assistant.”

“Sounds great. Maybe I can find a job like yours. By the way, where should I put my things?”

Abigail looked at her brother and shrugged.

Jake’s jaw clenched as he worked to control his frustration. “If the storm clears, you’ll be driving home tonight.”

“But…”

Holding up his hand, he stopped whatever Helena meant to say. “If the storm continues, we’ll find an extra bed for the night and you can drive back after breakfast. Those are your only two choices.”

“What if I want to stay?”

“Do you have enough money for an apartment, food, and gas while you look for a job?”

“You know I don’t, Jake.
