Chapter 16

Rushing across the vast ranch land, Kate swiftly caught up with Chance. Her pleas for him to listen had fallen on deaf ears as he kept marching away from her. She picked up her pace until she was able to move in front of him.

Crossing her arms over her chest, she forced Chance to stop.

“Kate, you played me.”

She could see the hurt in his eyes and heard the defeated tone in his voice. The last thing she wanted was to be the one that created that uncertainty that he seemed to be forever struggling with.

Reaching out to him, she tried to take his hands into hers, but Chance held his hands up in the air.

“No, Kate.”

“Would you please just listen to me?”

“What could you possibly have to say to me at this point?”

She sighed. “Frankie’s revelation about my relationship with her parents and her feelings about me don’t change what I feel, Chance. And it shouldn’t change what you’ve felt. I know it’s only been a couple of days, but in this short time, I feel as if we’ve created a bond. You really matter to me. Your thoughts. Your feelings. Your concerns. I really like you, Chance, and I believe that you really like me, too. At least you make me feel that way when I’m with you. I can’t recall a time when I’ve felt more protected and adored as I do when I’m in your presence. I had an amazing night with you last night, despite our run-in with those two guys. And up until now, I’ve been having a good time with you. I just want more of the same. I’m really here at the ranch today for you, not any other reason. I promise.”

“I can’t… I just can’t take your word as fact. You weren’t honest with me from the beginning, so how can I believe anything that you’re saying now?”

“It’s because I didn’t know you. If I had known Frankie was tied to you and your family in any way, I would have disclosed my relationship with her. I don’t operate my business using unscrupulous practices. Their decision to send me out here to determine whether or not they would finance the wedding happened so quickly. I didn’t have time to conduct an in-depth investigation about the family that Frankie was marrying into. The day they requested my services, I was finishing up another event. By the time I turned my attention back to this project, I had to leave the very next day. My time and resources for investigations were limited.”

“I’m not buying it,” he disputed, shaking his head.

Kate’s heart dropped, and she was surprised at how much she had started liking Chance in such a short time.

“Do you recall how upset I was when I first arrived in Sagebrush?”

The shake of Chance’s head encouraged her to continue.

“You considered my behavior rude, and I know that I was condescending. Well, that was simply because I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
