Chapter Eight
Wesâs mood didnât improve over the next couple of days. If anything, it got worse. And evidently he wasnât able to hide it.
âYou need to go see Claire,â Justin said as they loaded up a few head of cattle they were selling.
âWhat makes you say that?â
âBecause youâve been sticking to the ranch the past couple of days and youâre about as pleasant to be around as a ticked-off porcupine.â
âI thought I was supposed to hang around the ranch since itâs my job.â
Justin pointed at Wes. âSee? That. You usually joke, but now youâre just being a snappy smart-ass.â
Wes spun toward his older brother. âMake up your mind. First you tell me to be careful around Claire, like youâre warning me off her or something. Now youâre telling me the opposite. What the hell, man?â
Damn if Justin didnât smile. âDad was right. Youâve got it bad.â
âWhat? A case of annoying family?â
âI warned you off because I know your usual dating M.O. But itâs different this time. You really like her.â
âOf course I like her!â He started to repeat what heâd said to Parker, that Claire was nice, but he stopped himself. It was more than just admiring her or thinking she was a nice person. Something else was going on, something with which he was severely lacking in experience.
âThen stop moping around here and go tell her.â
âI donât think thatâs a good idea.â
âWhy not?â
âYou said it yourself. Iâm not serious when it comes to dating.â
âMaybe you havenât been before because you hadnât met the right woman yet.â
âI barely know her.â That didnât feel true even as the words left his mouth. If he looked at the situation honestly, he could see that heâd felt drawn to her from the beginning. It had been different than just physical attraction, which honestly was what always drew him first. He supposed he wasnât different than most people in that regard, but something beyond her looks had pulled at him, making him want to get to know her better. It was almost as if heâd crossed some cosmic magnetic line that refused to free him. He wasnât even sure he wanted to be freed.
âYou donât have to know someone a long time to like them.â
âI canât figure you out. One day Iâm sure you think Iâm not responsible enough to date seriously, and the next it feels like youâre convinced Iâve found my one true love.â
âI donât know if Claire is your one true love, but itâs interesting that that thought even crossed your mind.â
âMelody has rubbed off on you too much.â
âI can think of worse things.â Justin shut the gate on the back of the cattle trailer. âAll Iâm saying is that Iâve never seen you this way before. You seemed to have a good time with her, and then all of sudden you just stopped.â
âI donât want to hurt her.â Wes wondered if that was the most honest, most vulnerable thing heâd ever said to his brother.
âThen donât. The fact that youâre worried about that tells me a lot.
