Chapter Eleven

Blowing out an unsteady breath, Abby watched Grant drive away. Wandering back into the workroom, she had to shake her head. Her body still had this humming, buzzing sensation going and her fingers tingled like she’d just gotten an electric shock.

She hadn’t dared shake his hand goodbye. Just standing there, breathing in the subtle scent of aftershave and virile male, had made her senses clamor for something much more intimate.

If she felt that aroused just standing next to him, what would it be like to kiss him?

Spectacular, her senses whispered.

She had no trouble believing that. If she ever lost her way and touched him, she’d probably crave far more than a simple kiss. And she didn’t need to even start down that road.

“Friends” would be difficult enough to manage. But she had made progress today, she reassured herself. Enough to allow an attempt at friendship, at least until her commission was complete.

But feeling more comfortable about that attraction and indulging it were two different matters. Succumbing to that temptation could lead straight to the distractions—and loss of time—she couldn’t afford.

Because he was not only too attractive, he was too nice. Too easy to talk to. Having not had a handsome, kind, attentive man pay attention to her in so long, she could get carried away, especially after a glass of wine.

Carried away enough to kiss him.

And that wouldn’t be fair, because it would give him an entirely erroneous idea of what she intended. Going all cold and distant afterward would make it seem like she was playing the tease, or blaming him.

Even worse, it would be all too easy to get too depend on him. She’d have to guard against that. She’d been oh-so-tempted to accept when he offered to help her mount the map onto its backing. Yes, mounting the map was a difficult, tricky and potentially dangerous process, but she’d done it numerous times by herself. She’d worked very hard to become self-reliant. She couldn’t afford to let someone take over, take care of her, slipping back into having someone else make the decisions or do the hard things for her. Jeopardizing that hard-won independence.

Not when she had Katie to raise and protect.

Not when she was so close to achieving her dreams for the business she’d been working so hard to establish.

No matter how kind, attractive and helpful the man was.

It didn’t help that Grant reminded her so much of Ross. Not physically—Grant was tall, his dark wavy hair worn a tad too long and his eyes a striking blue, whereas Ross had been shorter, more powerfully built, with a square jaw and dark eyes. Since he’d been a Marine with a regulation haircut the entire time she’d known him, she didn’t know whether his sandy hair would curl or not.

But Grant had the same considerate, helpful, kind personality. The same quality Ross had of focusing his whole attention on her, listening like what she said or watching like what she was doing was the most important thing in the world at that moment.
