PART 5: The Message

CHAPTER 18

Well-Laid Plans

July 7

When David woke up the next morning, the feeling of exhaustion hadn’t completely vanished, but his head wasn’t spinning and his eyelids weren’t too heavy.

Aching all over, he pulled himself up from the three pillows he’d been laid on and looked around: he was in his hotel room, with a hot water bottle, now cold, on his stomach and fresh pajamas on.

The memories of his check-up at the hospital were faint and brief. All he remembered was a doctor saying he was out of danger and his parents replying they’d rather take him back with them.

Brad’s bed was empty, but he could see Shep dozing on the balcony, outside.

He glanced at his watch: it was past noon. He’d slept late. His brother was certainly at the beach. No one could force him to stay inside later than nine.

How come nobody else was there, though? He hadn’t been expecting them to sit up at his bedside, but, after all, he had been one step away from the Afterworld.

David grabbed the hotel phone and called his parents’ room. Two, three, four rings. They were out. He didn’t even bother trying Hilary’s room.

With his cell phone he dialed his father’s number. The phone rang until it went to voicemail. He tried his mother, then Brad, then Hilary. Tiffany didn’t own a phone. No answer. Either they were splashing around in the water, or there were music and chatter around them, muffling their ringtones.

David was about to start another round of calls, when his stomach growled painfully. Gee, that’s why he felt so weak. He was starving. He’d call room service. He couldn’t wait for his family to arrive. He was too hungry and he didn’t feel strong enough to get up yet.

He put through the call and ordered a giant Greek salad, grilled lamb chops, scrambled eggs, a cheese toast, a bottle of mineral water and a cup of hot tea. There would be enough for Shep, too.

Then he called the front desk to inquire about his missing family.

“Are you the guest who was involved in the accident?” the operator asked.

Man, the news had spread fast, like his screw-ups in school. Barely three hours after the fact, the video of his dissection accident had been all over the web. David wasn’t pleased with the unsought popularity, but couldn’t deny it.

“Do you need our health service assistance?” the man asked him.

“No, thank you, I’ve been to the hospital yesterday. I feel much better now. I only want to know where my family is. They’re not in their rooms and don’t answer any of their phones.”

“Let me ask.” The concierge put David on hold for a couple of minutes. When he returned to the phone, he sounded embarrassed. “Mr. Thompson… uhm… they left early this morning. They’re… uhm… taking an excursion.”

No way. David was dumbstruck. “An excursion?” They’d dumped him there, after he’d almost drowned, to go sightseeing, and without even leaving a note?

“Yes. They went to Heraklion with one of our guided tours.
