Sam

May 6th 2035

‘I managed to get us a couple of paninis and drinks,’ Hudson announced triumphantly as he climbed into the passenger seat of the car, carrier bag in hand, startling Sam.

He had been apprehensive when Sam announced that some surveillance of their suspect was in order. But two days in it was fair to say that his mood had not improved. She couldn’t blame him, of course, she was bored herself, but then she was being driven by something deeper, something personal. She would sit there for as long as it took to get something tangible.

‘Here.’ He smiled for what Sam suspected was the first time that day as he handed her a polystyrene box. ‘Ham and cheese.’

‘Thanks,’ Sam murmured, taking the box. Greedily, she bit into the hot toastie.

‘Any movement?’ Hudson nodded in the direction of the house.

Finishing her mouthful, Sam shook her head lightly.

This was the reality of surveillance, hours and hours of nothingness. Just sitting and watching. It was nothing like the movies made it out to be.

In the past two days, they had followed Miss Adams to work, where she had remained for the entirety of a twelve-hour shift. The previous day she had ventured to the supermarket. Hudson, in his civvies, had tailed her. She had brought all the usual: milk, bread, cheese, crisps, chicken. No alcohol, interestingly. Hudson had reported that she’d walked through the baby clothes aisle, although this was on the way to the checkout, and she hadn’t stopped to browse.

They still had nothing conclusive, and yet Sam knew with quiet confidence they were on the right track. She felt comfortable with her decision to concentrate all their efforts on this one suspect. Even if she was their only viable lead, Sam didn’t have the feeling that she was missing something. She felt at ease.

The guv’nor had quizzed her extensively, sceptically, of course. She had held firm though, assuring him that she would secure an arrest within a week, but she needed resources and resources cost money.

Eventually, he relented, his fear of further embarrassment for the department outweighing any apprehension he had about Sam’s decision-making ability.

Now the clock was ticking.
