MEDITATION EXERCISE:

Nature is our best teacher in the art of stillness, patience, trust, and surrender. If you can create an outdoor space for meditation, this would be ideal. Find a place where you will not be interrupted, away from the noises of city life, and one that offers a feeling of safety. A large stone or tree is recommended for grounding.

If an outdoor setting is not possible, then find yourself a quiet room with very little light. Natural morning light offers a gentle, inspiring sense of freshness and a reminder of new beginnings, as the sun slowly reaches for the sky. Those with sensitivity to sound and light may choose a darker room, or even a sleep mask to cover the eyes. Please read the chapter on sound healing for some recommendations on sounds that accommodate a healing meditative experience.

The following are instructions for meditation, as taught by Herbert Benson, MD, author of the book, The Relaxation Response.299

1. Repetition of a word, sound, praise, prayer, or muscular activity. Pick a focus word, short phrase, or prayer that is firmly rooted in your belief system.

2. Passively disregard everyday thoughts that inevitably come to mind, returning to your repetition.

3. Sit quietly in a comfortable position.

4. Close your eyes.

5. Relax your muscles, progressing from your feet to your calves, thighs, abdomen, shoulders, head and neck.

6. Breathe slowly and naturally, and as you do, say your focus word, sound, phrase, or prayer silently to yourself as you exhale.

7. Assume a passive attitude. Don’t worry about how well you’re doing. When other thoughts come to mind, simply say to yourself “Oh well,” and gently return to your repetition.

8. Continue for 10 to 20 minutes. When finished, do not stand immediately. Continue sitting quietly for a minute or so, allowing other thoughts to return. Then open your eyes and sit for another minute before rising.

9. Practice the technique once or twice daily. Before breakfast and before dinner are good times.

Healing visualizations work well with meditation. This would be an example of focusing the mind by choosing the right horse to ride; the one that knows the healing path.
