Chapter Three

The instant Pandora slipped her eyes open and saw the first rays of the morning sun, she was awake. As though a switch had flipped, she was asleep one second and alert the next. She didn’t move, aside from a blink or two, but her mind jumped speedily into action, a tiger that had been waiting to pounce.

She had no idea how long she’d been asleep. Like every night before, there had been nightmares. Like every night before, there had been Jax’s arms in the dark and the soothing lull of his voice. But one thing had been different.

Pandora shivered just thinking about it, a soft ripple that extended all the way to her toes.

Querida, querida…

The words were so crisp and clear in her mind, the simplest poetry. After Jax had thought she was asleep, he’d pressed his lips against the bare skin of her shoulder and whispered those words. It had taken everything in her to remain still, to keep her breath even. And when she didn’t stir, he kept going, lifting and lowering his voice to the tune of their song.

Con el pelo como el sol y los ojos como la luna…

Pandora closed her eyes. She’d heard the words so many times, thought about them so many more. The Spanish flowed easily into the English, one no different from the other since she’d translated them so many times in her mind, letting every variation of his song roll through her like a strong tide.

My love, my love, so close, so far away…

Her breath had hitched when he got to the last line, making him pause. And she hadn’t been sure if she wanted him to stop or keep going, so she let him decide.

Sweet dreams until tomorrow…

His words were like an incantation.

Mi corazón está contigo.

She finished silently reciting the song in Spanish, preferring the way those foreign syllables rolled off her tongue. In English, the words were generic, like a million other songs she’d heard on the radio or a million other promises that had been broken. But in Spanish, they belonged solely to Jax, and it was his voice, deep with the accent he’d learned from his father, that pushed through her mind, giving the words their magic.

Had he sung them to her every night this week?

Was last night just the first time she’d caught him in the act?

Did it matter?

The spell worked. She’d slept soundly.

And she was grateful for that.

Last night’s horror had been a particular brand of gruesome, and even after hours of sleep, her throat was still hoarse from screaming. She’d been back at the enclave, back at the ceremony. Her father had stuck the knife in her chest, and she was bleeding. So she shot him with her darkness—she shot all of them with her darkness. Her father. Jax. Her mother, who was somehow alive in her dream world. Naya. Kira. Luke. Everyone who had ever helped her had been swallowed by her shadows, then reemerged as beasts ready for carnage. And Sam had been there, black wings slick with blood.
