I jumped into the van, and it immediately took off.

“You know where,” Lawrence grumbled to the driver—a dark-haired woman around my age—and she gave a quick nod.

“Where?” I asked, searching for a seatbelt.

Lawrence ignored me. I glanced down and noticed that he had a revolver in his hand.

“I hope that’s not for me.”

“It’s not for anyone. But this is a dangerous neighborhood.”

“That’s what they say about my neighborhood.”

I noticed a thick scar creeping along his forearm. And then another scar, behind his ear.

“We don’t belong in this part of town. Police find us here….” He tapped his gun against his knee. “There’ll be trouble.”

“You’re going to shoot your way out? That’s insane.”

“Getting caught is insane,” he snapped. “I’m never sitting inside a police cell in this city. Not again. Not ever.”

I wondered if prison was where he’d got his scars. But with a guy like Lawrence, there were a thousand ways to get cut up, and not all of them would involve the police.

He didn’t relax until we’d passed through the empty checkpoint and turned onto the highway. He sighed and rubbed his eyes, placing the gun on the seat between us.

“That was stressful,” I said.

He ignored my comment. “You had some photos with you the other day. Those files. They were useful.”

“I know.” I folded my arms across my chest, feeling defensive. I was suddenly reminded that I was dealing with a terrorist group—and that I wasn’t a member.

“Well, we have other photos.” He stood up and retrieved a manila folder from the front seat. “I think you’re going to want to see them.”

“What are these?” I asked, snatching the folder from his hands. Inside were six high-resolution photos of dark-clothed men standing on a well-lit street.

“Surveillance photos. Outside a nightclub.”

“You guys own a nightclub?”

“No.” He let out a chuckle. “No, we have leverage over the owner of a nightclub.”

“Leverage, huh? You’re no better than these assholes.”

I knew I was baiting him, and I expected Lawrence to react angrily. But to my surprise, he gave a small shrug. “We have similar methods, it’s true. It’s a dirty business.”

“So,” I said, tapping the photos against my knee. “Am I going to have to guess? Who are these guys?”

“These are the hitmen for Fairfax. We’re pretty sure.”

“Hitmen?”

“The killers. They do the dirty work.”

“Only six?”

“Fairfax is mostly legitimate these days. If they have people to get rid of, they can always get the secret police to do it.”

“Unless it’s too illegal even for the secret police.”

“No, not too illegal. That’s not how they think. More politically risky. And if that’s the case, Fairfax’s hitmen do the job.”

I flipped through the photos again. “So what are we doing? Getting revenge? I don’t think I want to ride along just to see you kill a bunch of guys.”

He shook his head. “No, that’s not us, either. We’re not here to get revenge for Rebecca James. Fairfax can always hire more killers—there’s no shortage in this city.”

“What’s the angle, then?”

“The truth. You get the full story.
