Lakin woke early, thinking of her Me-maw and the little cottage. She wasnât going back to college. She was also moving on, just like Grandma Nelda, only her heaven and haven would be at the foot of the Brushies. She would move in with Me-Maw, and they would look out for each other. But first, she would have to tell her about the baby.
Laura woke late the next morning. The past week of little sleep had taken its toll on her. The first thing her senses picked up on was the smell of bacon. Me-maw!
After wrestling on her robe, she opened the bedroom door and hurried down the steps. Me-maw sat at the kitchen table, pen in hand. She was making a list: call the power company, clean, get new curtains and bedspreads. Hire a lawn man, gravel for the driveâ¦
âWhat are you doing, Me-maw?â
Me-maw was planning her future instead of drowning in the sorrows of the past.
âJust making a list. Things I need to get done before I move home. Iâve already checked the first thing off. I called the electric company, and they said the power would be on by noon. Do you think the girls would come down on Saturday and help us clean? Maybe they could pick out some new curtains and accessories.â
Laura listened as her me-maw told of all her plans. Right at that moment, she felt much older than her great-grandmother. Inesta was on a mission and was determined to conquer any obstacle that came her way. She was going home, and it was obvious that nothing would stop her.
âMe-maw, are you sure about this?â
âNo, Laura, Iâm not. Iâll need some help, and I hope you and the girls will provide that. I never wanted to go and live with Nelda. I wanted to stay at my house. Nelda had been after me for a long time to come and live with her. So when she got sick, I agreed. I figured she might need me as much or more than I needed her⦠and guess I was right. I couldnât ask Nelda to move from the home she worked so hard to build. Her place was so much nicer than my little shanty. That just didnât seem fair. Now, nothing holds me here. Itâs yours, Laura. Your mother left it to you. Do with it what you want. I wonât be coming back here again.â
âI talked to the girls last night. Weâll help you, Me-maw. You know we will.â
Laura watched a single tear escape her me-mawâs dark eyes. It rolled down her brown cheek and landed on her wrinkled hand. She took that same hand and smoothed a stray white hair from her face, pushing it back into the confines of the bun at the nape of her neck.
âGood. Letâs eat breakfast. Iâm ready to get started.â
They ate, and then Laura dressed and phoned home.
Lakin answered. âHey, Mom. Yes, I was still in bed. I guess Dad went to work, and I heard Lila moving around earlier, so sheâs probably at school.
