Same but Different

“Mina! Wait up!”

Lost in her thoughts, Mina didn’t realize Lauren was calling her until she was tackled from the back.

“Hey, didn’t you hear me?” Lauren beamed at her with such goodwill that Mina couldn’t be annoyed.

“You look down, Mina, what’s wrong?” Diana asked, popping her head around Lauren. “Did anyone bother you today?”

Mina shook her head. “Just tired, I guess.”

“And bored, right?” Lauren laughed. “Well, we’re going shopping because Diana still doesn’t have a Homecoming dress.”

“I don’t see why I need a fancy dress when I don’t have a date,” Diana responded.

“What do you mean? You have three dates! Me, Tracey, and Abby!”

Rolling her eyes, Diana nudged Mina gently. “Come shopping with us, Mina. And if you find a dress, you should come to Homecoming too.”

“Yes!” Lauren said. “Then it’ll be five gorgeous girls for everyone to cry over.”

She and Diana high-fived each other before linking arms with Mina and leading her to the parking lot. In Lauren’s car, the radio played songs that Mina had never heard.

“Who is this?” she asked, enjoying the infectious rhythm and melody.

Diana swiveled her body all the way around from the front seat in shock.

“Are you for real? You must be the last person in the world not to know this song! It was only the biggest hit of the summer.”

Mina gave a weak smile. “I don’t listen to the radio much.”

“Well, you should definitely check them out. Sabotage is my favorite K-pop band, and ‘You’re the Only’ is their biggest song to date!”

That this was a K-pop band that Mina didn’t know was fascinating; she was a huge K-pop fan. She wondered if Sabotage existed in her world and if their song would release there. It was a great song. The lyrics, all in English, struck the tender spot in her currently fragile heart.
