Chapter Twenty-Two
Dubrovnik, March 2010
As Fran emerged into the bright sunlight on Stradun after buying the stamp for Pattiâs postcard, her phone started to ring, Eliâs number appearing on the little screen. Swinging her bag higher onto her shoulder she answered it.
As ever, there was no preamble. âElvira has returned from Israel and she invites us to her apartment for coffee tomorrow.â
âThat is so kind. Does she remember anything?â
âA little, but perhaps even that will be useful. I will text you her address, but you might need your friend to bring you, or take the bus. She is my neighbour in Lapad.â
Fran wandered towards Sponza Palace and the harbour. As they had drunk their usual aperitif yesterday Jadran had said he would be working on his boat this morning and she wanted to find him, tell him her news. But all the same something made her hang back, and she stood for a while gazing at the intricate oak leaf patterns on the corbels of the building, lost in thought.
She could very easily find the right bus to get her to Elviraâs apartment, but somehow she wanted Jadran with her. Without her even realising it, finding out about her father had become a journey they were taking together. Yet it was her journey, nothing to do with him really. Except with every step, and twist, and turn, he had become more involved, and without his enthusiasm for hunting through the city records they would never have known about the Lopud connection. Would it even be fair of her not to tell him?
She simply wasnât used to doing things as part of a pair. Looking back, she couldnât remember having that sort of relationship with Ray, not even when Michael was a baby. It had always been her job to stay at home, and his to go out to work. It had been the way of things then, but she had never really felt they were undertaking the big adventure of parenthood together.
Yet with Jadran, doing things together felt right. Maybe a bit too right? The thought made her feel a little giddy and she tipped her head back and gazed up into the clear blue sky. There was no point in them falling for each other, and yet it was happening. Something deep inside told her Vedran was right and his uncle was becoming fond of her. But how could she allow herself to reciprocate when she was only here for another six weeks? And anyway, whatever Parisa said, she was far too out of practice with men to want one in her life that way ever again.
This was getting her nowhere. To buy a little time she wandered along the side of Sveti Vlaho to the Green Market. It seemed that every week more women turned up to sell their wares, but she still frequented the ones who had been there right from the beginning, who now greeted her by name. At Vedranâs suggestion she had asked a little about
