CHAPTER 18
NINA
It was a promise Nina wanted to keep, but Carter was still hiding things and while her life was at stake, she had every intention of finding out his secrets.
Why was he so loyal to Jedd? As far as Nina was concerned, Jedd was a sly, manipulative liability. Maybe she was wrongâshe hoped for Carterâs sake she was wrongâbut all signs suggested otherwise.
âSo how are we going to get out of the hotel unseen?â Nina asked.
âI have an idea,â Carter said. He looked to his phone, nodded, then grabbed his gun and tucked it into the back of his jeans. âCome on.â
Nina strode into action as Carter headed for the door. She had no confidence in this planâshe didnât even know what the plan wasâbut she was not going to be left in the dark.
âStay close,â Carter said before he opened the door and stepped into the hallway. Nina followed his orders, no more than a step behind Carter. They waited at the elevator, Ninaâs eyes catching Carterâs in the mirror. He gave a small nod and she exhaled a shaky breath. The dynamic between them was confusing.
Nina wiped the thoughts from her mind, focusing on her surroundings. She listened for any noise behind them, but the entire floor was silent. She wondered if it was too silent.
The elevator chimed before the doors opened and they stepped in. The doors closed, trapping them alone inside. Neither said a word as the elevator descended to the lobby.
The doors opened to a symphony of chatter and faces impatiently waiting for the elevator. Ninaâs eyes swept over them, but no one looked familiar.
Carterâs gun stayed tucked in his jeans, so she took that as a good sign.
âThis way,â he said under his breath. She walked beside him, envious of the way he moved so casually, like he wasnât expecting one of Danteâs men to walk around the corner any minute.
Nina, however, felt like her chest was constricting with every passing minute. Calm down, she reprimanded herself.
She followed Carterâs lead and soon they were walking through a door Nina was sure guests were not supposed to be walking through. She wondered how Carter knew this hotel so well.
âYou seem to know your way around here,â she said.
âI used to live here,â he said and she almost tripped on her feet.
âWhat? You lived at the Tivoli Hotel?â
âFor a short period,â he said vaguely, which only left her with more questions.
âJedd was right, you are fancy,â Nina said, earning her a hint of a smile.
Carter didnât respond but stopped at a door, pulled out a lock pick, cracking the lock faster than Nina could blink. She stepped through, into darkness.
It took Nina a moment to work out where they were but the smell of fresh linen tickled her nose, telling her what her eyes couldnât.
Carter locked the door behind them and they walked through the storeroom. She heard voices ahead and looked to Carter. He brought his finger to his lips, but he didnât say a word, nor did he slow down.
