Eddie slept badly that night. He was still full of adrenaline after the car chase. And besides, he knew his dad was in trouble.

It’s gotta have something to do with that carburetor, Eddie thought as he got ready for school in the morning. Something’s weird about this whole thing.

In the school parking lot, Eddie ran into a few of the guys from auto tech. They were standing around a classic Mercury Cougar. It had a fresh paint job: orange with a black stripe up the hood.

“Hey, Eddie,” called one of the motorheads. “Got that Camaro running yet?”

“Sure,” Eddie said. “Got it up to a hundred on the freeway last night.”

“Nice,” said another guy, nodding.

“You might have some tough competition,” said the guy in the Cougar’s driver’s seat.

“Right,” Eddie said, stepping up to the window. “Because it does the quarter mile in 10.2, right?”

“You heard that?” said the driver, grinning.

“I heard you say so,” Eddie said, “but it’s bull.”

The other auto tech guys laughed, and the Cougar owner opened the door, ready to fight.

“Whoa, whoa,” Eddie said, hands in the air. “I’m not looking for trouble.”

“You found it anyway,” the guy said. He gave Eddie a shove, and one of the other tech kids stepped in.

“Save it for the quarter mile,” he said. “All right?”

The Cougar owner backed off. Eddie hitched up his book bag and hurried away.
