CHAPTER 21

BOWIE

It wasn’t often I woke up with a soft body curled against mine. I decided in that moment, I wanted it to happen more often. It sucked that this would probably never happen again. At least not with her. She was going to be going home. Maybe today. By tomorrow at the latest. I knew it was stupid to think there was ever going to be anything between us. She was New York, I was Wyoming.

A relationship was just not in the cards.

I could see the sun peeking through the blinds. It was time to get up. I knew there was a lot to get done. It was only a matter of time before someone came knocking on the door, demanding I get my ass up. No one cared that I had a guest, and I had no doubt everyone knew I had a guest. The ranch was a hotbed of gossip. Everyone knew what everyone else was doing.

“It’s time,” she groaned and rolled to her side.

“Unfortunately, it is,” I said.

“I’m so comfortable,” she murmured and snuggled closer.

I squeezed her against me. “Me too.”

“I’ll get up and get us some breakfast,” I said.

I got up, leaving her warm body and cursing myself for having to do actual work. I would have loved to stay in bed with her all day. I pulled on some jeans and went to the fridge. I could have gone to the main house to get breakfast, but I wanted to hang out in our little cocoon a little while longer. I lit the stove and put the old-school coffee pot on.

I didn’t have much in the trailer. I was going to be better prepared in the future. She stepped out of the room, picked up her scattered clothing, and went back upstairs to change. I poured her a cup of coffee when she returned. “I’ve got instant oatmeal,” I said. “Or we can go up to the main house.”

“I’m good with oatmeal,” she replied. “Can I open the blinds?”

“Please,” I said, nodding. I put the pot of water on the stove and peered outside. I couldn’t see anyone, but I had no doubt in my mind everyone was up and moving around.

“What do you think the roads look like?” she asked.

“I would imagine they are drying out quickly,” I said. “Assuming we don’t get any more rain, which it doesn’t look like is going to happen, then I think you should be able to get out of here this afternoon.”

“Really?” She sipped her coffee. “I haven’t even checked my phone. I didn’t charge it. I’m sure it’s dead.”

“I heard the power kick on in the middle of the night,” I told her.

“You heard it?”

“There’s a noise,” I said, laughing. “And I could see one of the lights in the shop was on. It always casts a glow.”

“I guess I should charge it and see if I can book a flight,” she said.

“I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding a flight home,” I said. I couldn’t help but feel a little bitter about her leaving.
