SAUL LEFT the church. He’d grown dry and walked to The Wilted Tulip. The barista, a young man with rolled shirtsleeves, greeted him and Saul ordered water. When it arrived, he took it in a swallow. His body, slow to process, demanded more and so he ordered. A couple sat at the window. The man with his hand on the knee of the other. He spoke into her ear and she laughed, lolling her head back, her black ponytail shaking from her collared blouse and swinging behind her. He thought about Merav’s past lover. How she must have felt. Saul took another sip of the water, letting it stay on the bend of his tongue for a bit longer. When it had fallen toward his stomach, he said the word love. It was a strange word. A word whose image he could not conjure. Something about the thought put him off of going to Merav’s house and so he stepped into the night and walked the dark streets, rolling the priest’s story around in his head.

The city unfurled beneath his feet; Saul began to see things in a different light. It was as if the streets had been redesigned or the buildings around him had altered, as if a movie crew had erected a wood-thin set while he’d been away. He noticed statues he’d not recalled seeing, fountains that never spit water, bike racks littered with too many bicycles on every street. He had been directed by someone since he awoke. First, the note and matches, then Merav and Mr. Uriah. He’d admittedly been foggy since the awakening, and, as Mr. Uriah himself had pointed out, Saul was coming back into his own, whatever, he thought, that meant. The priest raised a valid point. Saul needed to ask better questions and seek out his own answers.
