Mobility

Our mobility undermines community. When people are constantly moving, we just don’t get to know them as well. For instance, in our neighborhood, we have a strong feeling of community. But one day, a couple started talking about moving, and I immediately felt myself pull away from them. I realized that I was unwilling to put time into a relationship that might end.

No Places to Hang Out

People don’t hang out in cafes much any more. We’re just too busy. On the other hand, maybe we would hang out if there were more cafes around. We have a local cafe in our neighborhood that is filled from 6 A.M. till 11 P.M. The owners of the Honey Bear don’t see themselves just in the business of selling food, they also see their role as creating community. They see themselves as one of the great good places that hardly exist anymore. Those of us who have quit our “real” jobs have our meetings at the Honey Bear, people meet friends at the Honey Bear, and people gather in the evening to hear music there. Everyone in town knows about the Honey Bear.

Why aren’t there more cafes? More and more chains are making it difficult for the small, neighborhood business to survive. As the chains drive out local businesses, the stores and restaurants all start looking the same. Some franchises are setting up pseudo-cafes. But who wants to hang out in a franchise where there is no uniqueness or authenticity or soul?
