CHAPTER TWELVE

Seeds

Zea Mays (Corn) Kernal extract

Maize or corn (Zea mays L.) is a plant belonging to the family of grasses. (Poaceae ). It is cultivated globally, being one of the most important cereal crops worldwide. It is used for human consumption in the various forms of meal, cooking oil, thickener in sauces and puddings, and sweetener in processed food and beverage products.

Maize contains many secondary metabolites, such as phenolics, flavonoids, and carotenoids. Maize has a higher antioxidant capacity compared to wheat, oat, and rice. The health beneficial properties of these maize metabolites have been attributed to their high antioxidant and antiradical activities, but also to many other mechanisms such as antimutagenesis, anti carcinogenesis, and estrogenic activities, inhibition of enzymes, and induction of detoxification enzymes.

Corn oil is also recognized as an excellent source of tocopherols. Tocopherols function as antioxidants and provide a good source of vitamin E. Like essential fatty acids, vitamin E also represents an essential component of the human diet as it cannot be synthesized in the body. The four major tocopherols found in corn oil are alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-tocopherol.

Cannabis Sativa (Hemp)

Cannabis Sativa is a herbaceous plant generally found in tropical and temperate regions of the world. It finds its roots in traditional Chinese Medicine, used to treat pain and inflammation. Its first observed use in the West was recorded for the reduction of itching.

There are 80 different compounds that can be extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant. Of these, the two primary compounds that are the most well-known are Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These compounds are derived from the leaves. Unlike THC, CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid and is often found in skincare and cosmetics. Cannabis Sativa Seed oil, which is also found in skincare products, is derived from the seed of the hemp plant and does not contain CBD or THC. These compounds are known for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and soothing properties, which can be beneficial for treating skin concerns like inflammation, dryness, acne, and eczema.

Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory

Research found that CBD was able to rescue skin cells called keratinocytes from UV-B induced damage, as well as stimulate the production of melanin - a natural UV-protectant- from melanocytes. It also acts to preserve natural antioxidant proteins in the skin. Furthermore, it was shown to inhibit inflammation involved in wound healing, as well as block critical inflammatory pathways in the skin. Therefore, suggesting multiple photoprotective mechanisms that may be useful for treating skin disorders such as skin agign or photoaging.

Eczema & Psoriasis

Directly related to its anti-inflammatory effects, studies indicate that C. Sativa may be effective in treating eczema and psoriasis - both inflammatory skin disorders with common mechanisms of disease. One study recruited 20 patients with psoriasis, eczema and resulting scars to administer topical CBD-enriched ointment in areas of skin that were affected twice daily for three months. The results found that this CBD-enriched ointment greatly improved quality of life in these patients with skin disorders, as it significantly improved skin elasticity, hydration and inflammation. Moreover, it was found to improve the severity of itchiness as well as loss of sleep in patients with eczema.
