Proude had been humiliated in front of his men and it was not something he was about to forget. The woman there claiming to be the deputy commander of the king’s guard had also, he was certain, shot and killed the church worker. She was to be taken and questioned.

It is unlikely that a woman would hold such a post. She is lying. Of that I am certain. I have no doubt she killed that workman, and for that she must be punished. If the abbot is correct, she is an escapee from the priory where she was to be for life. The man beside her was none other than Quentin de Ballon, who is supposed to be serving a thirteen-year sentence in the Holy Land. He is to be arrested also, and the entire family. They are obstructing and violently preventing justice.

The sheriff rounded up his messengers and they were sent out to recruit as many men as they could muster. He needed at least one hundred. With that, he should be able to overcome such a small number of men, no matter how battle hardened they were. He could not forget, either, the arrow she had continually trained on him. He had no doubt she knew how to use it. Added to this was the shame of Ballon’s glove striking him full force across the face.

The ultimate insult.

Pouring a good measure of ale, he slumped back into his chair. He needed to plan and plot how he could take a large army of armed men and gain entry into the manor. Once in, the handful of defenders would have little chance of victory. The odds would be too great.

First, I need to speak with the abbot. He may have important information. This manor is not going to get away with rejecting the power of the Crown. If what this woman says is true, she could beyond my jurisdiction. It is best that she be killed off quickly. She must be our prime target.

Proude gave instructions to his commander to be as ready as he could. He, the sheriff, would make the fifteen-mile ride over to the abbey. He was certain there would be news of some sort.
