Chapter 60

“May I have your attention, please?” Gracie said as she tapped her glass. “I hate to interrupt your happy chatter, but I first want to thank you for coming out this evening. My initial reason for having this gathering was to thank Susan and her quilt class for supporting my shop, just as many of you have. It is nice to welcome you into my new home. I also want to thank Glenda, who knows how to entertain when it comes to food. Esther, thanks for letting us experience your wonderful ravioli. It was delicious!”

A round of applause came from around the room.

“Now, I want to call on my friend Chris from Wine Country Gardens, who also brought us something special for the holidays. Chris, take it from here!”

Chris smiled and said how pleased she was to be at this fun party. “I asked Gracie if she had ever heard of Eiswein, and she said she hadn’t,” Chris began. “I told her I’d be happy to bring some this evening so you could have the opportunity to taste it. Years ago, German winemakers discovered how to make this wine because many of their grapes would freeze in the vineyards during the winter. Winemakers in Germany, Austria, and Canada were the first to produce it. The state of Michigan soon followed, and then the Finger Lake region of New York. It is very difficult to produce because it’s aged in very rare oak with tropical fruit. It is a rather sweet wine that is often used as a dessert wine. Tonight, I brought some Riesling Eiswein that I would like you to try. We’ll serve it to you in small glasses, much as you would an after-dinner drink. You’ll want to drink it slightly chilled to get the full effect. Glenda will come around with samples for you to try.”

“Thanks, Chris,” Gracie said. “I’m anxious to try it.”

“Well, I’ll bet someone, somewhere is making ice wine tonight, it’s so chilly,” Karen joked as she joined me. “Are you going to try it?”

“I think I’ll pass,” I said. “I really like this red wine I’m drinking.”

“Is it the Vintage Rose I saw you bring?” Karen asked with a smile. “You know that’s Anthony’s favorite.”

“How is the barn quilt business these days?” I asked, hoping to change the subject.

“Winter is production time and not particularly good for sales,” she explained. “Our best sale time is summer and fall. Are you ready for the Christmas Walk?”

“I am,” I responded. “Santa will return.”

“Hi, Lily!” Ruth Ann said as she joined us.

“Ruth Ann came with me tonight,” Karen shared. “The gallery had a great response as well from our fine Santa Claus.”

“Oh, Ruth Ann, did you put him outside like I suggested to Vic?” I asked.

“We were going to, but it was terribly cold with snow flurries predicted. But Susan kept the line moving pretty well, so it wasn’t too bad.”

“Did he have his quilt?”

“Yes!” she said, nodding. “It’s quite something how he shows the children their names.
