Chapter 11

Maxim: I said I had something else to do, and that was true, but I decided to improvise and do it in the parking lot of Encore. Luna might have been hopeful about her meeting with my mother, but I’m not. I expect Luna to call shortly.

The passenger side door of my SUV opens, and Hailey Andrews slides into the seat next to me. She’s the best hacker I know, and after work last night, I brought her the hitman’s phone. Hailey and I have known each other for years. She went to school with Yuri, Jenny, and me, and at one point her father worked for mine until he was killed in a car accident.

“Hey, beautiful,” she says.

I quirk an eyebrow at her.

She chuckles. “This is an interesting choice for a meet.”

“I have other business here.”

“Anything interesting?”

I shrug. “Perhaps.”

She unzips the backpack sitting in her lap and pulls out the phone.

“You work quick,” I say. This is consistent with the work she’s done for me in the past.

“Because I’m the best.”

I grin at her. “Yes, you are.”

She taps in four numbers and holds it out to me. “Eight-nine-four-oh.”

“Did you look at anything on it?”

She waggles her thin, dark eyebrows. “I thought about it, but you and I both know I would never do that. It’s not professional, and we both know that in this business, curiosity kills the cat.”

“You think I’d kill you?” I meet her green gaze.

She shrugs. “I don’t think you’d want to, but then…business is business, right?”

I nod. Once upon a time, Hailey was a bigger girl with braces and short dark hair. She’s changed a lot since high school. I’m not sure when, but one day I asked her to do a job for me, and she turned up thin with blue hair down to her ass, much like she looks now. The only thing that hadn’t changed about her was her round cheeks and her cute, flawless smile. I’ve never liked or had time for many people, but she’s an exception. She always made me laugh, and as a kid, I was not one prone to laughing.

I slide my hand into the inside pocket of my black jacket, pull out an envelope, and hand it to her. “There’s a bit extra. For the rush.”

She opens it and rifles through the bills. She raises her eyebrows and nods. “Not bad, Maxie. Not bad at all.”

I roll my eyes at her. “Don’t ever call me that in front of anyone.”

“Maybe I will, maybe I won’t. I might do it just for the rush. Just to see what you’ll do.”

I narrow my eyes at her.

Then she smiles and widens her eyes at me, tipping her head to the side.

I fight a smile.

She laughs as she climbs out of the car. Before shutting the door behind her, she leans in. “By the way, saw your girlfriend on TV. I’m impressed.”

“Take care of yourself, Hailey.”

“Same to you, Maxie.” She shuts the door and sashays away. I shake my
